I drove by Esther's old street near Bathurst about a year ago, as I was in the neighbourhood, and something pulled me towards it, to revisit that energy of so long ago. The house was of course, replaced, but I parked, and found it very emotional, as if I could hear the clatter of the dishes, the Yiddish exclamations, the pinching of the cheeks. While I was pretty much among the youngest of those who would visit her home in the 1960s, I was struck even as a child by the Old Country aroma, and Esther's indomitably radiant optimism. I also recalled seeing her some twenty years ago, when she put me in a headlock and told my now-wife-then-girlfriend that she should stick with me because I came from good stock. Talk about self-esteem -- clearly Esther had it. It's a testament that she lived to the rare age of 104. Many will miss her dearly, as she has been a constant for us all. It's seemed that there has always been -- and always would be -- an Esther. Like her biblical namesake, I expect that, wherever she is now, she'll continue to bring her indomitable optimism to the gathering. My deepest sympathies to the family, and I wish you much peace in the days ahead.
