John (Jack) Weisdorf, born on December 23rd, 1929 in Toronto, died peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, April 4th, 2020 in Oshawa. He is survived by his two sons Chris (Bunny) and Ashley, and his wife Stella (separated).
John practiced law for 59 years and was one of the longest standing members of the law society in its history. Throughout his career, he was a tireless advocate for fairness and justice.
He began his career in the diplomatic service of Canada, would go on to teach at the NYU school of law as an associate professor, be appointed as Crown Attorney in Toronto, and after as Vice Chairman of the then Immigration Appeal Board- all punctuated and followed by private practice. He would go on to represent many clients in the realms of immigration and criminal law.
Always ready to represent the downtrodden, John founded what would become Legal Aid in Canada. That public institution stands today to ensure justice, and access to justice, for all. It stands to ensure that our Charter of Rights and Freedoms- the supreme law of this country- applies to all.
John was a very loving and ceaselessly supporting dad to his two boys, Bunny and Ashley. He was a source of countless hours of thought, contemplation and conversation. He loved all of his road trips to the US with us and our time at the Fallsview buffet. Our cherished memories of him shall never be forgotten.
Services are currently extremely limited by law during the coronavirus pandemic. We shall properly celebrate John’s life in a year’s time, on or about April 8th, 2021 during his unveiling.
