Paul Hecht

I’m so sorry for the loss of Paul who was a friend He introduced me to the song shut and the finer points of the kiddish. I wish the family strength and the comfort of fond memories as we all have of Paul at Chabad. He will be sorely missed.

To the Hecht family. This is a shocking and devastating loss. My heartfelt condolences. The world just lost one of the kindest, sweetest, colourful, loyal best friend anyone could have. He was a loving and doting father, grandfather and most recently father-in-law. He was a man dedicated to his Jewish faith. May you all be comforted with wonderful memories of Paul - a man who was enlightened with goodness and will be terribly missed

There’s never a good time to say goodbye, but Paul was so loved & known by his community, I’m deeply saddened that he won’t be surrounded by the many people who knew him due to Covid & social distancing reasons. When I think of dear Paul I see his enormous smiles, and his big laugh. I first met Paul while working for ICRF and over the years have had the opportunity to see him on various occasions and he always bounded over to me and gave a big hug and filled me in on all that had occurred since the last time we'd met. He was generous of spirit. Proud of all his children, sharing stories and finding the positive in everything. The last time we met he was setting out a kiddush at the cottage and had that big smile - he will be missed!

Every time that we would cross paths, Paul and I would reminisce about the good, the bad and the current times. He was very proud of his family, and he never failed to say so. I came to know Paul two and a half years ago when I moved into the neighbourhood. He was a gentle giant. He loved to schmooze and would sit quietly nodding in assent or shaking his head if he disagreed. Or he would quietly smile and smirk. He was an elegant man who knew how to make an impact without being loud. He floated the idea of working with me to re-open my father's store, Perl's meat. But it never took hold as I could not think as big as he did. I believe that it was more than a business idea. He was nostalgic about old Toronto and perhaps the idea captured memories of him and his mother shopping there. Paul was a mentsch, a good heart, a business man, a foodie, who took great pleasure living life as a traditional Jew.

To the Hecht Family, I am so sorry to hear about Paul’s passing. I remember growing up with Rita and Paul on Ridge Hill. I loved reconnecting with Paul at all of our mutual friends simcha. I wish all of you no further sadness.

I was a friend of Paul and Linda many years ago but we had lost touch and not been in contact for close to 30 years. Then, just this Thursday afternoon past, out of the blue after all those years, a call came into my office and it was Paul. He was calling to see if we could do some business. But after reminiscing for about 40 minutes, I suggested he needed to speak with my son, Franklin, tomorrow, which was Friday. He did. Today, I heard he died later that day. I have known Paul for around 60 years. It’s been a long time since we hung around. I just saw him about a week ago. I was shocked when Jeff phoned me about Paul passing away. I couldn’t believe it. Memories flashed back, pool hall days, school, parties, Coleman’s, pick up girls or trying to. If it wasn’t for Paul I wouldn’t have met my wife Sylvia. That is another story. What I dreamt about was getting together with the guy’s again but it won’t be the same without Paul. He was a big part of our high school days.

So saddened to hear of Paul’s passing. Paul was a fun friend of mine for over 50 years. Going back to Thriftys Hamburger King on Bathurst. GTOs and being neighbours up at the lake on Alfred St Belle Ewart. Always a story and laugh. He will Be missed. Everyone knew Paul

I really only knew paul through the midtown Chabad services led by rabbi nechaniel deitsch every time I would see paul he always had a nice smile on his face and a friendly hello. he always had time to ask on me and my family. he seemed so full of life and love, it was a true joy. may he rest peacefully and always be seen as the nice true friendly person he truly was.

He was a dear friend and just a great guy. We go back a very long time. The memories are too many to recount. The times we laughed and plotted together were many. Our fathers were close friends and played cards weekly with their group. We would on many occasions observe their games with great interest especially as the stakes grew. Saturday evenings would not be winter Saturdays without us watching Hockey Night in Canada with loads of hot popcorn, and listening to music afterwards. Part of our past has sadly been taken from us. He will be greatly missed. May god comfort you among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.
