Dear Bandi bácsi, Speaking as the daughter of your dear friends Peter and Eva Dános, I do not remember a time that you and Vera néni were not in my life. I remember the frequent visits to the Kramers, playing with Martha (and often being "bugged" by Tom!). We would hear the laughter coming out of the living room as the four of you, or many couples when you had a party, would be all dressed up and having a wonderful time! I remember coming home from 2 years living in England when I was 9, only 1 suitcase for Mum, Dad, and me). You picked us up from the airport and took us to a furnished apartment with a fully stocked fridge and pantry. Only later did I find out that we did not have 2 pennies to rub together at that time, and you and Vera néni had literally given us a fresh start back in Canada. Thank you! As Tom and Martha moved from home, got married and had kids, I did the same. Our visits with you and Vera became fewer and farther between. But I always heard about the shenanigans you and my parents would get up to! I heard about the stories of Tom and Martha and the grandchildren, and it felt good to know that all was going well in your life! And now, Andrew, I speak as the 63 year-old adult child of Peter and Eva. I lost Mum in 2010, and Dad went to meet up with her in 2017. I almost feel like I've lost a surrogate dad today. I'm so happy that you have an amazing immediate and extended family to remember all the good times! I just wanted to share a few of my memories with you and on behalf of my beloved parents! My condolences to Vera, Tom and Martha, and to all the spouses and partners, siblings, aunts and uncles, cousins, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He would call me "smiley" and he was so kind, warm and caring... the father I never had. I have more memories of Vera making amazing Hungarian pancakes and the apartment would smell so delicious with all her wonderful cooking, lots of laughter and love.
