Roman Pelts was born on August 11, 1937 in Odessa, Ukraine

Mechanical Engineer, Honorary Chess Coach and a FIDE Chess Master

In 1959 founded a chess school in Odessa

Seven of his students became world known chess grandmasters

In 1964 won gold medal in World Chess student championship playing first board for the Soviet team

Was official trainer for the 1971 USSR student team on which Anatoly Karpov (world champion) played

Emigrated to Canada in 1978

Establishes first Canadian Chess school in Canada , Chess Academy of Canada

Represented Canada in 3 Chess Olympics

Was teaching Chess at Upper Canada college for 26 years

Is inducted into Canadian Chess Hall

A true gentleman, kind, intelligent, loving & devoted Family man

Survived by his wife of 63 years, Lyubov Pelts

Daughter, Alexandra Pelts; grandchildren Loren and Maxine ; and greatgrandchildren Lark and Aiden
