Joe was on of my closest and dearest friends for over 50 years. Anyone who ever met him Joe came away with the same comments: “He’s such a nice guy! A real sweetie!” Joe treated everyone, from his friends and family, to his clients, Crown attorneys, defence counsel and judges, precisely the same way: with warmth, kindness, respect and understanding. He was a fearless advocate but, Joe being Joe, did it all softly with a smile. Juries loved him. Judges liked and respected him. Being in court with him was a treat for all concerned. But he never flaunted his considerable forensic ability. Joe boasted about only 2 things - his family, and the pens and bowls that he made by the dozens and distributed to all knew him free of charge. Joe was also a talented wood turner. His garage was his hobby playground; full of his ‘turning’ equipment (and a plentiful stash of Cuban cigars). Joe spent much of his spare time, when he wasn’t practicing law or woodturning, doting on his many and devoted grandchildren. To his family, Joe was the architype: the ultimate husband, father and grandfather. To his friends, of which I had the honor to be one, he was generous to a fault, devoted to your well-being, and always there with a gesture, or a kind word, or a smile. Joe enjoyed the practice of criminal law. But most of all, he simply loved people. And people loved him. Joe was what in Yiddish we call a Mensch – a person of kindness, integrity and honour. Joe and I had lunch this past week. He was in great spirits and looking forward to a get-together with his family to celebrate his 76th birthday. He celebrated with them Friday evening. He enjoyed every minute of it. And then he went to bed; now an endless sleep. Our world has lost one of its own – one of its best. Truly one of a kind. He shall be greatly missed. Richard Shekter

To the Kappy Family, As a young 20 year old “kid”, I had the good fortune to meet and become friends with Joe Kappy in September 1970 at U of W Law School. We shared the next 3 years together. We also shared thoughts about various Professors, Courses and Law School itself. I always had great admiration and respect for Joe’s thoughtful aporoach. Always kind. Always insightful. Always with a smile. At one point I strongly questioned whether “Law was for me” but Joe encouraged me to continue in Law - in his quiet and most persuasive manner. I listened to Joe. I respected his opinion. I respected Joe’s judgment. I stayed in Law. We graduated together in May 1973. After wishing each other the best - we charted our own courses. But fate and circumstances intervened 30 years later and placed me in Newmarket. And who should I meet - who was there to greet me on one my first days- Mr.Joseph Kappy ! We smiled. We shared exchanges which were personal - to the surprise of everyone I’m sure - but it was great to see an old Law School friend - as though time had not passed. Same smile. Same warm personality. Same quality Joe ! Joe set a high standard in Court. How to treat others - everyone - with respect and understanding. So impressive. So genuine. So Joe Kappy. .To his many friends and associates - Joe enjoyed your company always. He set the example for us all to follow of a life well lived. To his family - Joe’s legacy is the love he shared and leaves with each of you. Peter J. Wright

What a warm and generous man. Highly respected by his colleagues. He was a good friend and mentor to many of us. My deepest sympathy to the family.

We last spoke in our weekly zoom on Thursday night. He was kvelling about his granddaughter Lilly. His death is surreal for me and our zoom friends. Not a mean bone in his body. We worked together, played baseball together, went to our last baseball trip to Milwaukee in July where he lost his wallet. It was found in his pocket. He adored his family above else. Only fitting he spent his last night with his family celebrating his birthday. To all his family remember the true mensch he was. I have shed many tears these last couple days. He was like a brother to us and irreplaceable. Our Joey.

At a time like this words fail to express the full measure of a man like Joe Kappy. They merely graze the surface. He was, of course, a mensch, a person of integrity, morality, dignity, with a sense of what is right and responsible. That is how he lived in the world. But there was much more. The man, many of you knew affectionately as Joey was admired and worthy of emulation. We talked often over many years. We talked about the law, the absurdity of our politics, sports and anything that amused us. I was always better for having spent time in conversation with Joe. Always more hopeful and optimistic. He was of noble character. No conversation ended without an expression of gratitude and contentment about his remarkable criminal law career and his beloved family. Above all, he treasured his role as Zadie to the grandchildren he adored. His sense of fulfillment permitted him to be supportive of others, to be a friend, to be calm in troubled times. We have lived next door to Ferne and Joe for the past 3 years, they welcomed us with open arms from the very first day and it has been a joy getting to know how amazing of a guy he was. I met Joe through the courts. A real gentleman and counsel to many who always focused on the true issues in a case. I had occasion a few years back to see him again in Oshawa. Joey Kappy was the embodiment of a mench. A giver, not a taker. Always warm and caring, and asking nothing in return. A model for the characteristics we all want in a family member, or a friend. Softly spoken, but clear, precise and intelligent in what he had to say, he was always there for those around him. We have always had a soft spot in our hearts for such a good man, and will continue to do so.

I enjoyed Joe's friendship professionally and personally. We were team mates on the Gaspers slow pitch team and travelled together in the late '80's along with other team members to various American cities to watch the Blue Jays play. Watching football games together at Henry's or Larry's. To Fern and family, may you gain comfort from this marvellous display of love and respect for Joe.

I enjoyed a collegial relationship with Joe Kappy during my years at both the Etobicoke & downtown Crown’s offices. Dear Ferne and Family, When Ned called me to tell me the news of Joey's tragic and sudden passing, I was shocked! To: Mr. Kappy loving family and friends, I learn of Mr. Kappy passing on a Google search, I am better late than never, I once ask Mr. Kappy what's your purpose in life, "He said, to do Gods will", I said what's that, He said, "To free the souls from Jail". Well Mr. Kappy was very passionate, about his profession, and I had witness his outstanding performance on many cases and seen those souls he had freed from Jail, I am also one of them. I am without doubts Mr. Kappy is in Heaven, if he is not and I am going to heaven I will trade places with him. I have know Mr. Kappy since 1990 for over 30 years had so many Jokes in court hall as we wait. Mr. Kappy very intelligent, wise, we argues possibilities and took the best way out, Mr. Kappy words he spoke is recorded before the courts, and moments of his life. Mr. Kappy represented me, he was the most valuable and important friend in my life, so as I struggle before the court system my dear friend Mr. Kappy watches over me from Heaven. Mr. Kappy also watches over his loving family and friends from heaven. I have witness Mr. Kappy performance many time before the courts, still hear his strong voice from my memories when he called over the phone. If there is anyone in the after life I would like to meet again is Mr. Kappy. Until we meet again my Great Friend Farwell and God bless you, your Family and Friends.

Dear Ferne, Jonathan, Andrew, and family, I just now learned of Joe's passing when I was looking to update my contact information for him so i could refer a matter to him. I am deeply saddened. He was a kind, sweet man. He was alwasy friendly and gererous wiht his time. He was, also, along with the rest of the Kappy family, a great next door neighbour. You have my most sincere condolences. He will be missed.
