Gerda Steinitz Frieberg passed away peacefully in her home on January 3rd 2023. She is survived by her children, Josey Frieberg, Jack Frieberg and Sandra Herlick, grandchildren, Adam and Sara, Mathew and Lindsay, Seth and Sarah, Orly and Daniel, Jay, Dovid and Shoshana and 11 great grandchildren.

Born in Upper Silesia, Gerda’s youth was stolen from her when the Nazis invaded Poland. After surviving the Holocaust, Gerda vowed to ensure the world learned of the horrors and remembered the victims, and she became a pioneer in Holocaust education in Canada and around the world. Her incredible work and involvement in the founding of the Toronto Holocaust Education and Memorial Centre earned her the Governor General’s Meritorious Service Medal, the 125th Anniversary of Confederation of Canada Medal, the Elie Wiesel Holocaust Remembrance Award and many more honours.

Not only was Gerda dedicated to Holocaust education and a host of other human rights causes, but she was also incredibly philanthropic and a pillar and leader within the Toronto Jewish Community. She was the proud President of a B’nai Brith Women’s Toronto chapter, Chair of the Ontario Region of Canadian Jewish Congress, founder of the Holocaust Survivors of Canada, and organized Women for Soviet Jewry. A self-proclaimed ‘troublemaker’, Gerda made her mark.

She was a pilot, a talented seamstress, a skier, hiker and competitive tennis player, but most importantly she was ‘Grandma’ – always hosting Friday night Shabbat dinners and holidays and reveling in the beauty of the family that she built – her triumph over the Nazis as the matriarch of future generations. May her memory be for a blessing.
