It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Martin Baranek. Beloved husband for 69 years of Betty Baranek. Loving father of Morry (z”l) and Arlene, Mark and Nava, Lenny and Ita, and Marlene. Adoring Zadie of Hayley and Uriel, Reide and Cam, Jamie, Palmer and Sam, Brett, Sam, Brandon, Jenna and Cole. Great-Grandfather to Maya and Judah. Also loved by Sam Pillersdorf and Syd Beder.

Born in Wierzbnik, Poland in 1930, Martin miraculously survived the atrocities of the Holocaust (though his brother, father and numerous family members did not). He made his way to pre-state Israel and then was reunited with his mother in Canada where he built a wonderful life for himself and his family. His passion for life never waivered and he never harboured any bitterness – even after Morry’s death in 2001.  He was the patriarch of our family – we had the incredible good fortune to love him and be loved by him.  After retirement, he became a leader and educator ready to share his story and his life lessons inspiring countless people .  He maintained many close and long term friendships in Canada, U.S. and in Israel.

Without him here, we will strive to embody his commitment to family, friends and the Jewish community.

We are beyond grateful for the loving care that Belinda, Sally, Mary Ann, Janet and Michelle have provided for Martin.
