Dr. Samuel Newman, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and respected Periodontist, passed away on January 6, 2025, in Toronto. Born in Sydney, Nova Scotia, he dedicated his life to family dentistry, and community.

Sam shared a loving marriage of 64 years with his wife, Goldie, and together they raised their children, Lionel and Alexandra, passing down values of kindness and resilience. He was a proud grandfather to Jack, Corey, Aiden, Charlie, and great-grandfather to Miles. Sam was the cherished brother of Sally Kert, the late Ruth Marks and Albert Newman.

A member of the Alpha Omega Dental Fraternity and a teacher at the University of Toronto Dental School, Samade significant contributions to the field of Dentistry. He was also an active member within many community organizations. He was a lifelong learner, continually seeking knowledge and growth.

Sam is survived by his wife Goldie, his children Lionel (Stacey) and Alexandra (David Altow), his grandchildren, and his sister Sally. His warmth, wisdom, and dedication left a lasting impact on all who knew him. May he rest inpeace.

Goldie, Alexandra and Lionel: I was so very saddened to learn of Sam's passing. He was a lovely gentleman. Years ago we'd see each other at Shaarei Shomayim and then a couple of times I had sat in his dental chair, in patient mode with my mouth open for his dental expertise. The past number of years we have been neighbours with a shared history spanning two cities, Hamilton and Toronto. Alexandra and Lionel, I remember you as young adolescents from Shaarei Shomayim and then bumping into you on the way to Village Shul and passing your old house on Old Park and chatting with your more grown up selves. A while back, Lionel was in the Shabbat elevator with Sam, on their way to Shaarei Shomayim. I know you were a loving close family and that Sam was immensely proud of his kids. You were all blessed and please G-d, I pray that your memories will sustain you at this sad time and beyond. My heart is with you all. Dear Newman Family I was deeply saddened to hear of Dr Sam Newman’s passing. Dr Newman was my clinical periodontal instructor when I was in dental school. He was always an amazing and kind instructor and treated the dental students with the outmost of respect ( which a lot of our clinical instructors sadly did not) Dr Newman was always a mensch to us. He was a true example of what a clinical instructor should be. After I graduated in 1971, I sent him an announcement card about where I would be practising dentistry. In return, Sam wrote me the kindest note wishing me the very best in my future dental practice. I still have his note to this very day. From the day that I started in practice, I sent all my patients (including my family) who needed periodontal work to Sam until he retired. Of course, I had to explain that we were not related even though we had the same last name! Every single patient loved Dr Newman. I even ended up in Dr Newman’s chair myself having my bite corrected. No one in Toronto could do bite corrections like Dr Newman did. I knew Dr Sam Newman to be a wonderful, gentle and kind man and I am truly sorry for your loss. May his memory be for a blessing. BDE

Dear Newman family: My condolences on the loss Dr. Sam Newman. Sam was a devoted Alpha Omegan. I remember him running the benevolence committee for the fraternity, and, for decades he single handedly ran the Sunday Breakfast Speaker event, held annually at Shaarei Shomayim. William Wallace stated that “every man dies. My condolences to the Newman family. I knew Sam both through Alpha Omega and as one of my instructors in the Graduate Periodontics clinic at the University of Toronto. Sam was a humble soul who was always willing to give of his time and his knowledge. To this day, I still employ some of the "tricks of the trade" in Periodontics that Sam taught me over 30 years ago.
