It is with a heavy heart that our family announces the passing of our Queen and family matriarch, Shirley Field (née Geranstein), at 97 years old. She passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Thursday, January 15th, 2026.
Predeceased in 2005 by the love of her life and partner in crime, Murray Field, Shirley will be missed forever by her daughters, Marla Gertz (Howie Gertz z”l) and Haley Field Fluxgold (Les Fluxgold). Bubbie extraordinaire, she shared a bond beyond compare with her grandchildren Dovid (Faigy Gertz), Rochel (Shmuel Stern), Leah (Eli Cherns), and Paige Kruger (Austin McGreal). Shirley cherished every moment with her many great-grandchildren: Miri (Yisachar), Moshe, Shragi, Chaya Etty, Yehudis, and Eli Gertz, Devorah and Yecheskel Stern, and Yoni, Benny and Aliza Cherns.
Shirley will be greatly missed by her sister Ida Schrutt, and her doting nieces Karen Feuerstein (Steve Feuerstein) and Debby Gesmondi (Joe Gesmondi). She was predeceased by her eldest sister, Hilda Cooper.
A force to be reckoned with, Shirley was a fashionista with a larger-than-life personality, dazzling inner and outer beauty, and a sense of humour that lifted her family and friends throughout life’s celebrations and sorrows. Although her love and selfless devotion to her children was ever-apparent, her greatest joy in life was being a Bubbie.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Amica Thornhill, her wonderful caregivers, and the formidable Palliative Care staff at Mackenzie Health.
