It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our dear Harold Sommers (born September 9, 1943) at the age of 83.

Devoted husband of Hana (née Sum), with whom he shared 56 years of marriage. Loving father to Stuart (Juliette) and Michael (Erin). Extra-proud Zaidy of his beautiful grandchildren Miles, Ellis, Olivia, and Camille. Dear brother of the late Izzy ז״ל, Esther (Jack) and Linda (Meir). Harold was a beloved uncle and “grunkle” to his wonderful nieces and nephews. He was also a best friend to many, especially his three  beloved dogs – all named Missy :).

Harold was born in Toronto to parents who emigrated from Europe. He grew up in Hamilton and later in Toronto alongside his brother and sisters. Harold became a lifelong schoolteacher in the Jane & Finch community, continuing to teach well into his 70s. His students and colleagues were enriched by having known him.

Most of all, Harold taught us what it means to be a mensch. His kindness, warmth and piercing blue eyes made him a friend to all. He was helpful and caring beyond words. He was a light unto the world.
