It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Aranka Vago, who passed away on June 24, 2025, at the age of 86, in Toronto, Canada.
Born in Budapest, Hungary, on January 3, 1939, Aranka carried with her a deep love for her family and a remarkable life story marked by resilience, love, and devotion. She often spoke fondly of her father, Vilmos Énekes, a European boxing champion, whose strength and presence she cherished throughout her life. She also held the memory of her mother, Margaret, close to her heart—Margaret tragically perished near the end of World War II while delivering food to Jewish families in hiding.
Following the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, Aranka bravely fled Hungary. Her journey took her to England and eventually to Toronto, Canada, where she built a new life and met her beloved husband, the late George Vago.
Known also as Ari or Goldie, Aranka was a devoted wife and a loving mother to her daughter, Eva. She and George shared not only a life together but also a deep partnership – Aranka often supported him in making business decisions and accompanied him on many business trips to Hungary and abroad. George often credited Aranka as an invaluable partner—her insight, warmth, and presence elevated every interaction, particularly in Hungary where she made business entertaining and meaningful.
After George’s passing, Aranka continued their business with tireless dedication, working alongside her daughter for decades.
Family meant everything to Aranka. She maintained close relationships with George’s extended family, especially Ildi and Andy Winter and their parents, who remained an essential and supportive part of her and Eva’s lives. She also shared a lifelong bond with Tamás Buzai, a relative from her childhood in Hungary.
In her later years, Aranka leaned on the support of Eva and Eva’s partner, Michael Senderovich, for the many challenges of aging. Aranka affectionately referred to Michael as her son-in-law and the “man of the house.”
Aranka was full of life. She noticed the little things, had a kind word for everyone she met, and always had a joke to share. Her warmth, humour, and strength touched many.
She is deeply missed. We hold her in our hearts and offer prayers for her soul.
May G-d bless her and watch over her always.
