Avi Citron

Peacefully, on February 3rd, 2021. Dr. Allan (Avi) Citron, beloved husband of Symee Citron for 57 years. Loving father and father-in-law to Elliot & Miriam, Lisa & Issie, and Michael & Shoshana. Devoted Zaida to Yael, Zev, Cobi & Tovy, Leora, Maital, Maya, Ari, and Odelia. Cherished brother and brother-in-law to the late Harvey & Estelle Citron, Sharon & the late Harold Klug, and Shelly & Jerry Javasky. Adored son and son-in-law of the late Hilda & William Citron and the late Peggy & Harry Guest. Caring uncle to his many nieces and nephews. Friend to all. Avi will be remembered for his kind smile, his generous nature, and the endless love he had for his family. Donations can be made in Avi’s honour to the charity of your choice.

Symee and all the family-- Avi was such a lovely man. I'm sure each of us has fond memories we will carry of him. I have to say one of mine is bittersweet, because it involves marmalade! For a little while, Avi was my dentist, and during one appointment he said to me: "What do you have for breakfast?" I said I had started making marmalade and had it on my toast in the morning. He said, "I thought so: that's why the enamel is eroding at the gum line. Brush after breakfast!" So I did, and still do, and every time I even look at a jar of marmalade, I think of Avi. He was a sweet, gentle man, and I was very fond of him. His memory, for me, is a blessing.

Dearest Michael and shoshana , There is a cliche saying ; the apples do not fall far from the tree. Michael and shoshana. That tree must have been a genuine tree. A wholesome tree. Dear Citron family: I was fortunate enough to have worked with Avi for over 25 years as a dental hygienist. After our daily good morning I was blessed with his morning ritual of a joke or his Yiddish pearls of wisdom!! What a wonderful way to start the day !! What a joy all those years together were, and what devastation has resulted in his passing. Avi Citron was my Bnai Akiva madriach (group leader) in the 50’s when I was about 10 years old. He was the best madriach, all the kids loved him. Every Shabbos I would walk all the way from College to St. Clair where Bnai Akiva was held in the Vaughn Mizrachi building just to attend the group. It was always a huge disappointment when Avi didn’t show but they explained that he had to study for his university exams in dentistry. I also used to shlep-with my younger brother Stanley and that’s how he got to know Avi and idolize him in the same way I did. This really manifested itself a few years later when Stanley got an abscess tooth that really hurt. He refused to let our family dentist look at it and insisted my father take him to Avi Citron. My father found out he was practising down on the Lakeshore halfway to Hamilton and that is the longest trip to the dentist we ever took - but my brother said it was worth it. May all the family find comfort among the other mourners of Zion and Yerushalayim

I would like to offer my condolences to the Citron family for their loss of a husband, father, grandfather and brother. My friendship with Avi was born from our common love of the game of tennis. Over the years, I had the privilege to get to know Avi as a most gentle, modest, calm, intelligent, well-informed, good natured person. Our very competitive games were invariably followed by friendly chats about issues of the day, family and sports. The sudden illness put a stop to our meetings on the court, and we kept in touch by phone. The conversations were always pleasant, Avi never complaining or dramatizing his condition. I will always cherish the privilege of having had Avi as my friend.

I only heard now (end of Pessach) of Avi's passing. So so sad to hear. Avi's office was adjacent to my father's supermarket in Richmond Hill, and so I knew him professionally as well as socially. He had very gifted hands. Summers when I would visit from Israel he was always a friendly and welcoming face, and it was always a treat to catch up over kiddush at Bnai Torah, and share a laugh. I will miss him. May you be comforted among the mourners of Tzion and Yerushalyim.
