Avihu Bar-el died peacefully at North York General Hospital. He lived to celebrate his 90th birthday. Born in Tel Aviv, Avihu lived in Haifa and then was a member of Kvutzat Geva until he moved to Winnipeg, Canada in 1955 in order to marry Shirley. His two sons were born in Edmonton where Avihu was a teacher at Edmonton Talmud Torah. Their daughter was born in London, Ontario where Avihu taught at Or Shalom Synagogue and London Talmud Torah. An avid, hobby film-maker, Avihu inspired his students and their families over many years by leading collaborative movie projects of bible stories. The family’s last move was to Toronto where Avihu was the Director of the Jewish Media Center at the Toronto Board of Jewish Education. Loving husband, father and loyal friend, Avihu is survived by his wife Shirley, son Dan, daughter Leora, daughter-in-law Dominique and son-in-law Ross. Avihu was predeceased by his son Yoav.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Kirshen from the Temmy Latner Center for Palliative Care, and a special thank you to Avihu’s caring and compassionate nurse, Moein.
