It is with great sorrow the family announces the passing of Barbara Labovitz (nee Bankey) on July 4, 2024 at the age of 83 years in Toronto. Barbara is predeceased by her beloved husband Kenneth and sister Lorna (Mervin) Berofsky. She will be deeply missed by sons Gary (Fiona) and Aaron (Caroline), brother Martin (Shoshana) Bankey, sister-in law Vivian (Herman) Miller, grandchildren Emma, Jacob and Saul, as well as her nieces, nephews and cousins. Barbara leaves behind many close friends, some of whom she has known since high school. Barbara was born to Saul Bankey and Minnie Tischler originally from Ukraine and Toronto, respectively. She was one of the founding members of Shaar Shalom synagogue and was at one time the president of the Sisterhood. She was devoted to her family, particularly her grandchildren and was a surrogate mother to several others. She was a lifelong learner and went back to university as an adult to continue her education. Barbara had a bubbly personality, made friends wherever she went and loved to “make” a good party. She enjoyed travelling with Ken, playing card & board games and collecting ceramic butterflies. She recently began making pottery and would send her creations to school children. Everyone who knew her will remember her zest for life, service to others and how she cherished being with those she loved.
