Carolyn Blackman Libman

We are so devastated by the loss of our beautiful, sweet Carolyn. Her kindness, perpetual smile, and our shared experiences over 30+ years created a treasure trove of memories I will cherish forever. Working side by side every day for over 30 years, we shared stories, every life event, health issues, new restaurants, a good book, recipes surrounding every yontif, and of course off we went for our annual Boxing Day outings. To Carolyn, family was everything. She exuded so much pride when she shared stories about Jenny, Sarah and Robbie. Then her grandchildren became the center of her universe, her beautiful, adorable grandkids who have lost their beloved bubbie. The harmony between Carolyn and David was a testament to a beautiful partnership. They had a very special bond and an understanding that few couples reach. Each and every one of her friends were her family. She had a big enough heart to hold space for all of us. Carolyn had another family, her CJN family. She was so loved by all who had the pleasure of working with her. As the CJN food editor for so many years, Carolyn was responsible for most of my tried and true recipes. Those were the best read pages by the Jewish community. She touched everyone, near and far. Each one of us will continue sharing stories of our Carolyn for many years to come. Eight years ago we created the “Smooze and Views” bookclub. We met monthly and Carolyn’s entrance, accompanied by her infectious laughter and warm smile, set the perfect mood for each discussion over dinner. Then there’s our morning word games we shared on Facebook. It was almost like a check in every morning when we all “liked” each other’s results. It's unimaginable to fathom that our beautiful Carolyn is no longer with us. Heaven has gained a truly precious angel. Our hearts ache with the void her absence leaves. You are so missed already my precious friend. May your memory forever be a blessing.

Words never seem like enough. My thoughts are with you all, knowing how close you are as a family and how important Carolyn was to every one of you -- and to everyone else whose life she touched, including me. She was the first person I met and really got to know at The CJN. I was older than most of the staff and very conscious of the fact that I knew nothing about journalism at the time. Over all our years at the paper, Carolyn's desk was close to mine, and she helped me to navigate my new environment at first, and to get through many other, more personal issues afterward. With her welcoming smile, understanding, and positive words of encouragement, she was truly a good friend for 30 years. We will all miss her, especially you, her family.

To Carolyn's family; I remember Carolyn on two levels. First as a young girl who was friendly with my younger sister who was a bunkmate, as her elder sister, Susan was my bunkmate at Camp Yungvelt. Then, many years later, we sat at a table at an Aish Haftorah dinner, where she was there to represent the C.J.N. We were happy to find that two women at the same table, virtual strangers, were now engaged in friendly banter of childhood summer camp memories. This is still a pleasant thing to remember. I was lucky enough to work with Carolyn early in my career. She was a wonderful mentor and an amazing person. My condolences to her family.

No one could laugh at a joke the way Carolyn did. First, there was that wide, warm smile. Then, a slight shake of the head. Then, laughter - deep and resonant. She smiled and laughed like she meant it, and she did those a lot. She was a caring, kind, wonderful person who consistently brightened the offices of The CJN, where she was a Jill of All Trades: Writer/reporter, compiler of the What’s New page of communal listings - a job that required singular patience - occasional copy editor, and as the paper’s all around cooking/food maven. Not having her around was the equivalent of a rainy day. People like her are rare, and we in the CJN community will miss her. Condolences to David, her children and grandchildren.

Her love for family and sweetest relationship with her grandchild was an honour to witness - she had this infectious joy that made just sitting around during swimming lessons feel like a privilege! My first friend has lost her best friend. Her mama. The loss feels profound and impossible to make sense of. As a child and young adult, I have hundreds of memories of being welcomed into Carolyn’s home in that characteristic, warm, Carolyn way. I remember her holding my face in her hands and hugging me. I was shocked and very saddened to hear of Carolyn’s passing. I first met Carolyn when we were campers at Camp Yungvelt in 1963. Even though we weren’t close friends, our paths kept crossing several times over the years! We are still trying to come to terms with the sad realization that Carolyn is no longer with us. It was not long ago that Carolyn reached out to me in December to find out if I had finally travelled to Israel and that I saw postings of her taking advantage of boxing day sales. We met at the CJN and since then we bonded. Robbie and Naftali were the same age, born during the same month of October. We saw each other at work and met a couple of times after, while the kids played baseball and Sunday mornings at the community Centre for Bell Raptor ball. Then your family joined for High Holiday services when Gedalia lead services at the Kiever Shul. We stayed connected all these years even after Carolyn left the CJN. David, Jenny, Michael, Sarah, Robbie, Heather, Susan and family our thoughts are with you at this difficult time. You should find comfort in all the good memories shared. We will always remember her dearly.
