Daniel Sheldon Freedman

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Danny Freedman on Saturday, May 8, 2021. Beloved son of Irene and the late Carl Freedman, dear brother and brother-in-law of Steve and Pam Freedman, uncle to Jason Freedman and Amy Soberano, Lisa Freedman and Ben Rozyn, and lovely great uncle to Dylan Rozyn. Danny loved to make people laugh and his greatest joy was standing on any stage of a comedy club. Danny had wonderful friends all over Canada, including devoted and loyal Toronto friends who were always by his side. Special thanks to the amazing care from the doctors, nurses and support staff at Princess Margaret, St. Mike’s and Toronto General Hospital. Thank you to his daily nurse Moein Zabihi, and his personal friend and physician Dr. Zvi Gorlick.

Danny fought a courageous battle; he had an incredible will to live.

A family graveside service will be held on Sunday, May 9^th at 1:00pm. Private Family Shiva.

My life with Danny started in the mid 70's at York Mills Collegiate. Playing gin rummy and clubbyish for hours. Going on golf trips. Bringing him Pancer's sandwiches when he lived in Calgary and he met us in Fernie BC for one of many ski trips. Hanging out with him with Joel and Dave and Chet and Ricky and plenty of others playing cards and watching sports. Laughing at his jokes. When I saw him in my office not that long ago he said he was looking forward to playing golf this summer. So positive. I miss him already.

Growing up with Danny meant hockey, hockey, hockey - in the basement, on the driveway, on the street, on the ice. We even played the table top version. We went to Marlie games Sunday afternoons and saw some of the greatest future NHLers from rink side seats. There was also the pinball machine and Hot Wheels. We played baseball together and we spent Saturday mornings at the bowling alley. We saw the very first Blue Jay game together from the worst seats in stadium (Sec 4, Row 23, seats 3 and 4). Later in life we worked at Camp Robin Hood together. We always had an amazing time. He loved to entertain. He will be missed. To Steven, Pam and Mrs Freedman (Irene), I am so sorry for your loss. RIP my old friend.

There are no words to describe the 2 years we were roommates at windsor- or should I say Detroit I don’t think we missed a sporting event in Detroit or attended so many Michigan football games. We always always talk abt how the Michigan Ohio st game was one of the best sporting events ever. Who knew going to windsor meant seeing the spitfires play every Thursday night walking down the block from our apartment. The stories I could tell are endless and the stories I can’t tell even more. Danny u were one of the nicest , funniest guys on and off the stage and I will miss u always.

I met Freeds thru his roommate Steve Blustein when we were at University of Windsor. We'd all hang out together watching sports and playing Intellivision baseball for days on end. Last time I saw him was a few years ago when he posted on FB he'd be performing at a comedy club in Montreal coincidentally the same weekend I was going to be there. We hung out before and after the show. He had the best Leaf joke which I still remember. He handled his illness with optimism and grace. My sincerest condolences to his family. RIP my friend.

My tears for Danny are heartfelt; he holds a special place in my heart and as a part of my youth. I spent many years as a young boy, playing hockey in his driveway, listening to his budgie speak and sing, playing baseball together and enjoying all the fun times young boys have discovering the world around them. Irene, Carl and Steve were always so lovely and welcoming. With a sad heart I say goodbye to a good friend. He always came to visit when he was on the west coast and today as I write this with tears in my eyes I say goodbye to a special part of my youth and friend forever. I will always remember his kindness, thoughtfulness and of course that smile and a laugh. He fought hard and with courage, and my condolences to Irene, Steve and all the extended family.

So heartbroken to hear of Danny’s passing. He was funny, genuine and compassionate. I will love him always as a comic and a friend. I remember trying some new jokes and bombing. Dear Mrs. Freedman, Steve and Pam, condolences to all of you on your loss. I met Danny when we were 12 years old, grade 7 at St. Andrews JH. We played on the same hockey team. Back then Danny was an all star stay at home defence man. Did not strap on the goalie pads until many years later. Mr, and Mrs. Freedman drove me to many games. The Freedman house was always welcoming to myself and all of Danny’s friends. Spent a lot of time there. Always had some pizza in the fridge, listened to some Elton John (Danny’s fav) and of course watched a Flyers game later. Always on a well built comfortable couch / recliner with a lifetime extended warranty. After we got our driver’s license there were some fun road trips as well. Maybe a trip or 2 before we had our licenses but we don’t have to talk about that now. Over the years Danny has made countless friends and acquaintances and you have left a lasting memory on all of us. Freeds, we all miss you and will think fondly of you forever.

I was saddened to learn of Danny's passing. I am just one of many that Danny knew through comedy as he often performed on my show and was ubiquitous on the stand-up comedy scene. Danny and I often exchanged messages offstage and hung out before and after shows and I am just one of many in comedy who consider him a friend. I have never known Danny not to be upbeat and smiling. Comedy and bringing joy to people was deeply important to him and he worked hard to reach as many people with laughter as possible. Many comedians cheered him on during his illness and are sad that he has moved onto the next stage. I'm sure he would be proud to know that he positively touched the life of so many, since it was his life's passion. Danny laughed his way through trouble and succeeded in bringing others along for the journey, and in that way was a great success.

Danny and I met at YMC and although we kept in touch for while after high school, we eventually lost touch by our mid 20's. I kept tabs on Danny through Joel and Janet. Some 25 years later my father passed away. You can imagine my surprise when one evening during the Shiva, I saw Danny walking towards me. That act of kindness speaks volumes. What also speaks volumes was Danny's unbridled resilience and awe-inspiring attitude during his adversities. Each and every time I bumped into him, all I ever thought was WOW. I had the privilege of performing stand up comedy all over Richmond Hill with Danny. Once at my show at Archibalds Pub, we had an older crowd not into the younger people jokes about dating apps and whatever and the show was going badly. Danny went up and had everyone laughing their heads off and everyone was warmed up and laughing for the rest of the show. That is a testament to who Danny was - a spark of hilarious energy that could brighten up any room he was in. He was filled with stories and was always a pleasure to hang around with during shows. He will be missed by our whole community and I wish we had more time to perform together.

We met in high School, attended York and the University of Windsor together and shared so many great times. We lost touch for a while but recently reconnected in Florida and we both had a great time catching up and reminiscing about all the crazy and fun things we had done together over the years. I was so glad to hear Danny tell me with such enthusiasm about his comedy career and how much he loved what he was doing. Danny took everything in stride and somehow was able to find the lighter side of any situation. His quick wit and contagious smile always put everyone around him at ease. We played many sports together and all who knew him would agree that Danny was a fierce competitor and just as in sports he gave it his all and more with his battle with cancer.
