David Rubin

We are so saddened by Dave's sudden passing. Our whole street will miss his presence. From hanging out with Roxy on the lawn, washing his car with his music blaring to his dry sense of humour. Our family will miss him very much. Our condolensces to Shirley, all the children and grandchildren.

He was my walking buddy with our dogs every afternoon for the past 7 years except on weekends when he would be up north either on his boat or Ski-Doo. We would banter about different issues, joke around and meet a lot of dog walkers as we did our daily walks. He cared deeply about his kids, grandkids, wife and talked about them all the time. I have had the honour of knowing David since 199. The first time I met David was at the courthouse in the cafeteria. I was having lunch with a Paralegal and he came with his healthy lunch of course and sat down and joined us. From the first time i met David my instinct told me that he was a special person and that i would somehow see him again. That being said even though I was not a paralegal at the time I saw him numerous times at the courthouse and he always made sure to say hello to me. It was a few years later that I really got to know him as the firm i worked for employed David's firm as a paralegal. We quickly developed a rapport and the roots of a friendship formed. He was always so professional, knowledgeable , and so calm. David had many passions including coaching his kid's hockey team. By coincidence i knew David's assistant coach and attended some of their games. That is how i met Corey and Bryan. Over the past 18 years I had the honour and pleasure of seeing David regularly at the LTB. On occasion when I needed some guidance on a case he was there to help. Once in a while David would call me for some advice on a matter and that was truly an honour since such a well respected Paralegal would ask me for some advice. Thanks to you I got to know Corey and Bryan especially Bryan. Bryan and I have developed despite the great difference in age have developed a permanent friendship!!! David was a caring person who was there to comfort me when I lost my late wife and would always ask how i was doing. When I told him about meeting Jacqueline he broke a big smile and said, 'that's great I am so happy for you.' After hearing the news he always asked me about Jacqueline although he really did not know her. Although Jacqueline did not know David she would say that she feels like she knew him so well. I could write so much more about my friend and colleague. To the family please accept our sincerest condolences on your loss. David will be truly missed!!!!

Dear Rubin family, I knew David while I was Duty Counsel for tenants before the Landlord and Tenant Board. I respected and enjoyed him for his integrity, knowledge, wit, and gentility.

I have had the pleasure of working for David for the last 7 years. This sudden loss still doesn’t feel real and I just want him to walk into the office on Monday. David always lit up our office with his jokes and personality. We were able to know him as an excellent advocate and professional on a daily basis but even more as an amazing person. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and he always lived life to the fullest. From insisting we stop working to look up a song that he wanted to show us to searching our office for snacks, he always knew how to make everyone laugh and lighten up. David would always joke and say he was a legend in his own mind but the truth is he was a legend in many minds. He has touched so many people, he will always be remembered and missed. Dear Bryan and family, I was so sad to hear about David’s passing. I am truly blessed to have know him. He was such a wonderful, warm, and amazing person. He was one of the first people I met when I became tenant duty counsel in 2008. It was always joy to chat with him. Especially when he lit up and talked about his family. After we got through hi, how are you…he always would say “have you seen the latest pictures?” When I decided to go into private practice, I reached out to David and he told me it would be his pleasure to answer any questions I might have. Recently our encounters have been virtual but we we were able to chat a few times while waiting for hearings. May God bless his incredible soul and comfort all of you during this difficult time.

Uncle David - It’s still such a shock and doesn’t feel real. We just spoke on the phone about how you were so excited to dance and drink (vodka) at my wedding. This wall of messages is a testament to the fun, loyal, sarcastic, sunshine loving family and business man that you were. Your most favourite role was being a Zaida. It’s ironic that today it’s pouring outside- you would have hated this. We will miss you and remember you forever. Always in our hearts.

David was an unassuming giant, who loved life and people . So down to earth intelligence. He always listened before he spoke. Cool, calm and collected. Over the years he represented our companies at the landlord and tenant board. David never lost a case for us . His low key approach enabled him to develop the biggest and most successful legal team in Ontario, representing most of the largest landlords. He seemed like a brother to me . One of a kind.

My condolences to Bryan and family. I was privileged to have met David 25 years ago in the courts and have always been put in a state of calm when in his presence. David was a kind generous humorous man and will be greatly missed. I was fortunate to have spent time with David on his favorite lake, Lake Simcoe. Seeing David out on the lake on his speed boat hoping he would come by my cottage for a visit to which he did but regrettably not enough times. David and I would often talk of boating on Lake Simcoe at the courts while patiently waiting for the ice to thaw for yet another season of one of David's favorite past times. David will be deeply missed. Lake Simcoe will not be the same without David.

David’s presence just lights up the room from his jokes, to rolling his eyes in court, looking for snacks, feet up on the desk, listening to rock music, bringing in Roxy, talking about the cottage, the smell of his cologne to his favourite drink (grey goose). He was such an intelligent man and knew his craft and was well respected. May his soul R.I.P and my sincere condolences to the Rubin family….Fly high D.R

After being in utter shock and disbelief, I've had time to reflect on the man I knew these past 20 years. I remember David's competence, his curiosity, and his eagerness to share his knowledge and experience. He loved and appreciated technology, especially boats, cars, and a particular fondness for the history of flight safety. When watching his favorite movies, it was endearing to watch David proclaim, "This is the part!" He wanted to share that joy with others. He expected much of those around him and was never shy about where he stood. It was special to watch the bond he created with our children and how excited they would be to speak to him each day. However, what David may most be remembered for was his penchant for giving his blunt and honest opinion. Just as his life was one of impact, his passing will forever change the lives of those around him.
