Dr. David Myer Goldberg passed away peacefully on November 2, 2022. He is survived by his loving wife Pearl, daughters Susan and Tanya (Benjamin), and grandchildren Jonathan, Miriam, Rachel, Nicky, and Adam. David was the first Jewish student to be elected President of the student union at the University of Glasgow, where he completed a medical degree and Ph.D. when he was not playing rugby or boxing. He was head of the Departments of Clinical Biochemistry at both the Hospital for Sick Children and the University of Toronto and a widely published scientific researcher. He had a lifelong love of the arts and gastronomy, especially wine, and an insatiable curiosity for travelling around the world with his beloved Pearl. A gifted raconteur, his stories rewarded the listener’s patience with an account rich in detail and humour, enhanced by his particular touch of embellishment. His generous spirit, wit, and zest for life endeared him to many friends and he will be greatly missed by his family members. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of your choice.

Shiva will be at 44 Grangemill Crescent on Saturday, November 5 and Sunday, November 6, with visitation from 7 pm to 9 pm and services at 7:30 pm.

We were deeply saddened to hear of David's death. He was neighbour and friend. His life was a legacy of remarkable accomplishments as brilliant student, athlete, physician, clinical biochemist, professor, teacher and administrator. His personal life was full of extensive and exotic travel, love of music and the arts and sophisticated oenology. His thirst for knowledge was unquenchable. There was none like him. We extend our sincerest condolences to Pearl, Susan, Tanya and the entire Goldberg family.

Dear Pearl and family We are so sorry to hear about the passing of David. We feel so fortunate that he was part of our lives for many years. He was one of the most positive individuals we have ever met particularly while battling cancer. He was a man is so many talents,truly a worldly individual. Over amazing the years together at Chabad Bayview, David and I shared many laughs & tales of global travel, he was also very generous with his impeccable regular whiskey & wine recommendations. My 2 children grew up on shabbat mornings at shul around David, who always shared a unique bond with them on shabbat, his kindness, and love was immeasurable. So grateful to have had the privilege of spending time with David. Deepest condolences from the Wolch family.

Pearl and Family, we are so saddened by your loss. Since August 1, 1975, when David met our Dad, Lee, at the University of Toronto, and later our Mother, Ouida, David and Pearl have been colleagues and close friends. The two couples enjoyed each other's company over many luscious dinners and fine bottles of wine. Their conversations covered every subject imaginable, but especially their passion for travel. As we sons listened, and in time, joined in, their stories became part of our lives, too. After our Mother passed away, David and Pearl committed to keep in touch with Lee, and they did so faithfully, with many more fine dinners and the companionship that only life-long friends can share. We will miss David for his sincerity, kindness, and unwavering support. We offer our deepest condolences to Pearl and the Goldberg family.

I always looked forward to seeing him at wine shows and our own private wine events to hear stories of his latest international travels and what was happening in his life. We (Ann and Dean) came to David and Pearl later in life -- he was an astute member of the Wine Writers Circle of Canada, with an additional love for classical music and opera. We all enjoyed constant chatter about these topics of "wine and song", and we wish Pearl and the Goldberg family well and safe during these pandemic times with our sincere condolences.

I am sad that I will not have the great privilege of being his friend in life, but I am sure that the strength of our friendship will continue in my heart into the future and beyond. We met whilst travelling around India in 2016 and from then we would share the most wonderful memories through the wonder of email. As I have reflected on David's passing, 2 things about him really stand out for me. First is his love of his family and second his love of education, both of himself and also his enthusiasm for sharing knowledge with others. As his friend, I was blessed with many of David's efforts to share his deep knowledge and love for so many things, including wine, food, art, music, travel, sports, etc.. He was a connoisseur of so many things. Professionally, science was his main focus of course and we shared some of this as well. The energy and commitment to learning that he embodied will be missed by many and I am so happy to learn of his efforts to share his knowledge with his grandchildren. My heartfelt condolences to Pearl and the rest of David's family.
