Dr. Jose Firszt (May 20, 1939 – April 21, 2023)

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Jose Firszt on Friday April 21, 2023, peacefully at home.   Jose will be forever remembered by his devoted wife of 44 years, Anna, and his three children and their spouses, Natalie (Stewart), Rafi (Alyssa), and Matthew (Kate), as well as his grandchildren Ryan, Jesse, Ben, Rowan, Madeline, Jacob and Riley. He is survived by his sister Jenny (Isse), and was pre-deceased by his brothers, Mario and Pedro, in Argentina.

Jose was born in Poland in 1939 and then spent several years hidden in a Russian labour camp, before his family immigrated to Argentina. Despite his late entry into formal education, Jose excelled and went on to graduate from medical school in Buenos Aires and then from McGill University where he also completed his residency and became a talented urological surgeon in Montreal. Jose was extremely devoted to his many patients and  was well known for providing care to anyone who needed help and could often be found performing minor surgery in various kitchens in Cote St Luc.  He is remembered as a true gentleman who was very generous, kind and affectionate to all those he encountered. Jose was notorious for winning every game of Rummikub and chess he ever played. In his later years, he enjoyed playing bridge, golf, squishing his grandchildren, reading, and spending winters in Florida with his beloved Anna.
