It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Edward Bennett on March 17th, 2021, in his 97th year of life. He was born on May 18th, 1924 in Cairo, Egypt, one of 7 children. Dear son of the late Joseph and Mathilde Benaderet (Benadretti). He is survived by his devoted wife Gilda (nee Betel) of 64 years, and loving children: Susan (Marvin) Rosenberg, Joyce Bennett-Rosen, David (Laya) Bennett, and Sheila (Andy) Rechtshaffen. He left behind many cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as special nieces and nephews in Canada and throughout the world. Brother-in-law to Bernie Betel, Myer and Harriet Betel.
Edward came to Canada as a British subject, having served as a Sergeant in the British army seeing action in North Africa during World War Two. Despite English not being his second, or even third language, he studied at Queen’s University and got his CA designation. He spoke 5 languages (French, Arabic, English, Italian and Portuguese) and had limitless interests and hobbies – having also studied plumbing, electrical, pest control, photography and computer science. He loved to garden, shovel snow, plant trees and work on ham radios. He was never happier than when he was travelling, or with family, and always had a professional camera – with comically-large lens – to capture those Kodak moments.
He was a lifelong learner who was devoted to his family, and never stopped pushing himself; soldiering through the toughest of times.
Edward will be forever remembered and always in our hearts.
The family would like to add special thanks to the wonderful staff at Viva Retirement Residence over the past 4 years; as well as Mackenzie Health Hospital for their exceptional care and support during these past 3 challenging months. All of the staff, too many to name individually, have gone above and beyond the call of duty.
Memorial donations may be made to The Association for the Soldiers of Israel 416-783-3053 https://www.asicanada.org/ or the charity of your choice.
