Eliyahu Marder

Eli was a thoughtful, caring, clever, and funny man. I worked with him for a time that now feels too brief but I will always be grateful for. My love and deepest condolences extends to all his family. May his memory be for a blessing.

It’s hard to find the right words to even appropriately express such a great loss. My heart breaks for Leba, the kids & the entire Marder family. I know how much you all truly meant to him and brought him great joy. I had the honour of working with Eli for the last 15 plus years and we shared a lot of funny memories getting these V!VA buildings built. He was always there to offer support and a calm, level headed approach to getting the job done. I will carry his ability to ask a million questions, stubbornness, humour and to never take no for an answer with me always. His memories will stay with me forever and he will be deeply missed. I just learned of this loss. Eli was a very kind and thoughtful individual, with a very sharp eye on real estate investments. I’m so grateful to have had the chance to meet and work with Eli, albeit for a very brief time. May his memory be for a blessing.

I'm so very saddened for the passing of Eli. I'm grateful to have met Eli, although just for a few occasions. I started at V!VA in mid 2022. Eli always came to greet me, or to talk to me and got to know me whenever he saw me, and the conversations were pleasant and sincere. His way of treating new team members reflected what a gentleman he was! I'm sending my deepest condolences to the Marder family and he will be missed by all!

I am sincerely saddened by the news that Eli passed away. I worked with Eli and Ira at Regency Care. I also knew him from Meadowland Retirement Residence. He was a lovely man and my sympathy goes out to all his family as he was taken way too soon. There is a presence he shared that cannot be soothed or replaced. Sunday Night, January 7 - 27th of Teves Dear Uncle Harry and Aunty Shirley, Liba and her dear children, our dear cousins, Shana, Shlomo, Ira, Moyshe, Chana and Miriam, and the entire beautiful family ka”h, may you all merit long healthy and happy lives, This letter is just an optical illusion. I really have no words, only thoughts and feelings. Words come from Seichel and right now my simple Seichel cannot comprehend what is going on. Thoughts and feelings are connected with the heart and right now my heart is thinking about all of you. Eli had many great qualities and although I only knew him well years ago, those qualities only improved with time. Eli had a tremendous Shem Tov - a good name, which is worth more than all of his money. This good name was part of him from his youth. Eli was always kind and loving just as the whole family is, ka”h. This is a trait which is inherited in the Marder DNA. When we were young, I remember writing letters to Eli and he was always a mevakesh and a lot of fun. Eli’s petira created a great dent in a beautiful gorgeous polished piece of silver. But the beautiful silver remains. We may not let the petira be a shattering of fine bone china, where the dish is destroyed and gone forever, Chas V’shalom. Eli is in Shamayim and will surely be a great meilitz yosher for the entire family. He will use his great name to benefit his dear family, community and perhaps even all of Klal Yisroel. I do not know why I keep thinking about Akeidas Yitzchok when I think about Eli’s petira. Akeidas Yitzchok keeps popping into my mind. Perhaps the reason is because now is the time for the family to accept the decree of Hashem just as Avrohom Avinu accepted the commandment of the Akeida. No one should ever go through this Gehinom, R”l, but if a person is in Gehinom, then they need to figure out and remember how they got there, in order to find the way out. When I was in Toronto during the past summer, Eli was in Texas. The whole family was there with him in their thoughts and Tefillos. Perhaps let us just change Texas for Shamayim. His Neshama is alive and well in Shamayim. Around fifteen years ago I taught a boy whose mother had passed away a few years earlier and he was emotionally healthy and a regular boy in the class. How did he manage? The trick was that he lived with his mother as if she was still alive. He accepted that she passed away and at the same time understood that her Neshama is still alive. On Sunday afternoons, he would often tell the class that he was going to visit his mother in the cemetery. Today this little boy is happily married and building his own home. Rav Mordechai Schwab Zatza”l of Monsey would say that accepting is the key. Accept the situation; that is Ratzon Hashem. That is the only way to proceed and be successful. In Parshas Shmos, Hashem told Moshe Rabbeinu to take the Yidden out of Mitzrayim. Moshe Rabbeinu finally agreed and went to Pharoah and the Yidden were all excited. They had Emuna and were expecting to go out free. Suddenly, everything got much worse. Hashem Yerachem! This is not what they had in mind. And Moshe Rabbeinu came back to Hashem to complain that things do not seem to be working out the way they should be. Hashem was not satisfied with Moshe Rabbeinu’s complaints. They should have had more Emuna. How are we to understand this? I told my class a mashal: One day, the Rebbi told his class that if they learn geshmak, then they will get something special. They learned extra geshmak and they were expecting some extra recess. It came time for recess and the Rebbi told the boys to take out a piece of paper and pencil and to write an assignment a hundred times. They were fuming and presumably rightfully so. Then the Rebbi told them that this was all a test to see if they trust the Rebbi. The Rebbi told the boys to look out of the window. He hired a bus to take the whole class on a major trip to an amusement park with an overnight at a hotel with catered meals. We will never understand in this world the Ways of Hashem. But we need to accept as much as we possible can. It is hard and even close to impossible, but that is the greatness of Yiddishkeit. Yidden do that which is impossible. That is the strength of Klal Yisroel. Where does this strength come from? Those who can have true Bitachon and trust in Hashem are the luckiest. The next level is to look at the good which we have in this world. As much as a person is able, he or she should focus on the good and the positive which exists in their world. Aveilus might be a a time to mourn and appreciate the loss, but after that comes the time to find comfort and search for ways to rebuild and secure the future. I do not know if any of these thoughts and feelings really apply to any of my dear relatives. You are surely very strong and should only become stronger. Uncle Harry and Aunty Shirley are the most loving and caring people in the world. And the whole family is following this beautiful Mesora. I wonder if you realize what a beautiful Shem Tov you have. This is a rare treasure. Hold onto it. The Marder family should continue bringing Nachas to Hashem forever and ever. This will be a great zechus for Eli’s Neshama and everyone’s Neshama. Spending Shabbos in Toronto this past summer was almost the same as twenty years ago, thirty, forty and fifty years ago. My Zaydeh and Bubby Schmerz are not in Shomer Shabbos Shul, but they are there in Toronto. Yibadel Lchaim Tovim, Uncle Harry and Aunty Shirly aged a little but still have that same youthfulness and humor. Life goes on. Eli’s petira is a bump in the road from which you should hopefully find a complete Nechama very quickly. I am not worthy of writing any words, but I cannot control my thoughts and feelings. Please accept them out of love and concern. I just have one piece of advice for the whole family. Ask Zaydeh, Uncle Harry Shlit”a, for as many Brachos as possible, especially on Friday Night by the Shabbos Licht. I have only just heard about Eli's passing. Eli was a mentor to me early in my law career. As a client he saw something in me and gave me a confidence that propelled me forward. I loved working with Eli. He was smart. Kind. Fierce when need be. But always tried to find the best in people and situations. He will be sorely missed.
