SANKAR, Esther – We sadly announce the passing of Esther Sankar on Wednesday, April 24, in her 95th year. Beloved wife of the late Moses Jonathan Sankar, z”l. Loving mother of David & Michèle, Naomi & John, Levi, and Dan & Romy. Devoted grandmother of Aron, Evan & Eleanor, Mara, Ben, Olly, Coby, and Ruby. Fondly remembered by countless family and friends in Israel, India, UK, US, and Canada. A very special thank you to all of the wonderful and caring staff at Cheltenham Care Community, in particular to Fritzie, Savita, Liylya, and Shellon. A member of the Bene Israel Indian Jewish community, Esther was born in Karachi, British India, to Solomon Chincholkar and Penina Nagaokar. After Partition, she fled Karachi and went to Mumbai, where she met and married her husband, Moses. Shortly thereafter, their young family immigrated to Canada, eventually settling in Oakville where they were active members of the Beth El Jewish Congregation. Widowed after just 17 years of marriage, Esther went on to raise her young family alone. She was happiest when doing things for others, whether cooking, cheering vociferously at soccer games, or most importantly spending time with her beloved grandchildren. Her childhood nickname meant laughter in Marathi. Esther was always smiling and laughing, no matter what challenges came her way because she saw goodness in everyone and in every situation. Her favourite expression was “Never mind; be happy. G-d is great.”
