Our Auntie Ethel was a very special person that meant so much to me as a child growing up. Both her and Uncle Arthur's kindness and generosity will never be forgotten. Our thoughts are with you and your families at this difficult time. May she rest in peace.

So sorry about the loss of your beloved Mom. I remember her so well while she resided in Thornbury. She loved working in her store and meeting people. May good memories endure!

Dearest Randi, Ian, Jeff, Debbie and all the Family. My heartfelt grievance on the passing of my beloved sister Ethel. I have many fond memories of good times at the cottage in Gravenhurst, both summers and winters. Your parents always had room to accommodate our family. I remember cooking with your Mom for Passover in the basement and all the dishes all over the pool table. Eating in the Sukkah, after decorating, was another fun family get together. Your Mom and I talked about getting everyone's growing family together again at this stage of life. I hope that this will happen. Family is the most important thing in life. Randi, it has been eons. So sorry to reconnect at this sad time. I saw the picture and I knew it had to be your mom. She has your wonderful smile, which I always remembered from our university days. I know what you are going through because I lost my mom not too long ago. I wish you and your family my sincerest condolences. May she rest in peace and may her memory be a blessing.

My very first recollection of Ethel Premier was when the young lady from London, Ontario became Ethel Levman. Ethel chose me to be the ring boy at their wedding and it is still one of my very first memories. She treasured that wedding picture and would proudly bring it out countless times that’s it’s permanently marked in my mind. Construction on their new home in the ‘manor’ must have begun almost immediately after the wedding and my father took me there quite often to observe the progress. Ethel and Arthur would have moved in sometime in `58 or early `59 as construction on our new home – only one block and one house away – began in 1959. Attendance at Cedar Grove Public school was of course necessary for me beginning in September `59 well before completion of our home - and so Ethel became my surrogate mother – truly my second mother. Lunch breaks were long in those days (1 and ½ hours) and so I walked to Ethel’s house where each day she made me lunch and then again after school to play while awaiting pickup from my mother. Their house was so close to ours as I grew up that even afterwards, I went over there probably more than anywhere else in my childhood. The welcome in their home was always filled with warmth and love. And I wanted to go. After all, Ethel and Arthur had the best ‘toys’ in all the manor as far as I knew. Arthur was an expert wood-worker and he built a train set that would set any boy’s eyes on fire. He built all the trestles, bridges, buildings and had a locomotive that he could drop some fluid into that made smoke come out of the engine - just like a real steam locomotive. One could gaze for hours and never be bored. Then later, Arthur must have exchanged it for a pool table – yes a real pool table – a priceless commodity for a teenager to behold in those days – unheard of in the ‘manor’ of yore. I would bring all my friends over to play pool and yes Ethel greeted them all with the same sincere affection. Ethel and Arthur’s open graciousness is still spoken of today by my manor friends. That couple left an enduring mark on them as well. Every other Sunday in season was the Argonaut game and all the Levman’s were avid fans. My mother Belle rarely attended but Ethel was always there with her Arthur cheering them on. They sat directly behind me to the right and I can still see them today. I can’t help but mention how I’d run over when her sister Ruth came visiting with her husband Avi from New Jersey – it must have been quite often because I cherished those moments and was saddened when they left for Florida and the visits became far less. They were quite the pair, those two – similar to my own mother’s connection with her sister Grace – also a manor girl. And babysitting Randi and Jeffrey, once old enough. Ethel used to tell me I saved her by giving her private time with her Arthur. I never really knew what that meant. The trials and tribulations of everyone’s lives slowly moved along but they were both very much in my heart. After moving to Thornbury Sandra and I would go up to visit even before they moved into the new house at the ‘Peaks’. As usual they were always more than just welcoming and would give my own children little gifts from the store that the kids loved. At times I would go up with just one kid for a few hours – just to say hello. My G_d they deserved it! One Christmas my daughter Eleanor was on the snowboard team and needed a place to stay while training on the slopes. Ethel drove her there every morning and picked her up. She has never forgotten. Once again – an indelible mark. When Sandra and I first went to visit Ethel at Baycrest she was sitting in the common room with her back to us. Her aide worker grabbed her wheelchair and turned her around and said to her ‘do you know who this?’ Ethel literally screamed ‘Mardy’. The affection and overwhelming love that emanated from that woman at that moment is something that truly no words can describe. It will not and cannot ever be forgotten by anyone who witnessed that moment – least of all me. I am certainly not a religious scholar and have little knowledge of orthodox belief but somehow I know that when Ethel passed she was greeted and embraced with the warmest of smiles by the angels above - and she most deservedly - joined their ranks.

Randi and Jeff … I’m so sorry to learn this sad news. I have so many fun and funny(!) memories of Ethel. I will always remember and be grateful for the warm welcomes she showed me, her creativity and her sense of humor. My beast is with you both. Jeff and Debbie, Randi and Ian, and the whole family, I am truly sorry for your loss. Great Auntie Ethel was so spirited and had such confidence. I remember spending time in Thornbury when I was little, “helping” her (but really just playing) in the store and Uncle Arthur teaching me how to make a wooden box in the shop which I still have today. I remember playing board games, helping her in the kitchen, and their loyal dog Napolean. Anytime I’m in Thornbury and drive past the store, I always point it out to my family. Sending my deepest condolences to you all, and may all your memories continue to make you smile the way she made us all smile. May she rest in peace.
