Eva Samery lived a full and active life until November 4, 2025.
Born in Budapest, Hungary, on February 15, 1931, she enjoyed a happy childhood in a beautiful city, spending summers in the countryside. Her early years were later marked by the hardships of World War II in 1942 and the Hungarian Revolution of 1956. During that time, she and her husband bravely fled Hungary with their young son, Robert, seeking safety and a new
beginning in Canada, where they built a successful and fulfilling life.

Eva went on to establish a distinguished academic career as a professor of Urban Studies at Ryerson University, where she was admired by colleagues and students for her intellect, warmth, and dedication to teaching.

Outside of her professional life, Eva was known for her vitality and love of activity. She enjoyed skiing and tennis, as she remained physically active throughout her life, embracing movement, health, the outdoors energetically with enthusiasm. She also cherished a loyal circle of friends, with whom she shared deep and lasting bonds over many decades.

She leaves behind a loving legacy: A brother, Tomi, her two children, Robert and Julie (Martin); five grandchildren, Jordan (Lauren), Rachael, Talya, Rebecca, and Hannah; and four great-grandchildren, Avi, Liora, Maya, and Cori.

Eva will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by her family and her loyal friends, many of whom are the countless students whose lives she touched with her intelligence, grace, empathy, and kindness.
