Fanny Dorothy Laufer

I can’t be there in person, but my thoughts are with you and the family.

Michael and I always enjoyed spending time with Auntie Fanny. Michael looked forward to talking with her every Tuesday at Lumacare. Auntie Fanny loved her family so very much and was devastated when her great nephew, Adam was taken from us all. Such a short time ago. Bless you, dear sweet lady.

Feyge-Dvoyre was the first namesake of my maternal grandmother who had died in Poland during a typhus epidemic. She was known to me as “Sweet Fanny” , my mother’s reference to her younger cousin who was a flower girl at her wedding. Visits with Fanny and her sisters were among my earliest childhood memories of frequent visits to Toronto from Cleveland. She was a teenager the, who taught me עטלעכע גראַמז and “Tsen Kleyne Malpes Shpringn oyfn Bet.” Over the years, we had some correspondence, many phone calls. After Gordon died, we talked more often. I enjoyed speaking with her in Yiddish. I shared with her, histories written in academic Yiddish about the birthplace of our immigrant generations. Although Fanny corrected and amplified my ability,I never achieved being truly conversant. After my mother’s death, Fanny was tenderly supportive. After all, this was her nature. To me, like my mother, Fanny epitomized so much that was good — true derekh eretz — the correct paths of interpersonal behavior, ethical standards — derekh eretz. Like my mother, Sweet Fanny will be ever with me— tzu gezunt, tzu leben, un tzu mazal After Fanny, eleven years after her birth, I was the next namesake followed by my cousins, David Sugarman and Donald Latchman. There were no granddaughters and no truly masculine versions of our grandmother's name. I am Dovid Faivl David Phillip Cohen

Fanny was an exceptional woman. We were both in a Yiddish speaking class before Covid . Not only was she aware but participated. She celebrated her hundredth birthday and travelled to Israel. I was always in awe of this sweet intelligent woman. Please accept My sincere condolences for your loss .

Dear Sandi and families, I was very sorry to hear about Fanny’s passing, she truly was a hero. She was best friends with my mom Myna and Max for years, they would go out and see each other as often as they could. They spent time together in Florida. Please except my deepest condolences on her loss. May her memory be a blessing, and she is now together with Gordon and Gloria.
