Felicia Lieberman

I am so sad and will always have a place in my heart. Felicia had many a yom-tov meals at our table and had many quiet conversations. Of blessed memory.

Felicia came into our lives when she participated in a program with the Downtown Jewish School. My daughter Maya, was in grade 6 when they met, and took a real shine to her. It was very mutual. She invited Felicia to join our large family seder that year, which made her new friend up. Then the teacher started to cry. Then Maya called me and told me what happened and I became emotional. She was really confused....."If I did something good then why is everyone crying?". Felicia was a regular guest in our home for all the holidays, and in between, for 7 years. Seven and a half years ago, in January 2014, I was appointed the Canadian Ambassador to Israel by PM Harper. Maya and I moved to Israel - where we continue to reside - at that time. When I said goodbye to Felicia before moving, she took both my hands in hers and was quite choked up. She paused for a few minutes. Then, she looked straight into my eyes and said, with that steely ferocity she had: "What you are doing is so important. If Israel had existed then then none of this would have happened." She became very emotional. As the daughter of a survivor, I know the depth of feeling behind those words and how difficult they were for her to say. It was profundly moving. I had also encountered Felicia, many years earlier, as the woman at Lieberman's Chocolates. Best chocolate orange peels anywhere. And like all the Passover pilgrims, I stood in that line for the special chocolates that went down the block. She had such a difficult life and had so much adversity to overcome. And she gave it her all. We took her to the ballet once, and sat in a box. She was like a little girl. Just beaming and so enjoying every moment. I have warm memories of our visits with her, chats over tea, and watching her slowly let down her guard and open up. We remember her so fondly and hope she finds some peace. Deepest condolences to the family and those mourning her.

I didn't know your parents, but have fond memories of visiting Lieberman’s Splendid Chocolate with my mother every year before Pesach. The smell of chocolate was intoxicating. May favourite were the chocolate lollipops. May your mother's memory be forever a blessing.

Dear Anna, I am so sorry for the loss of your dear mother. I remember both of your parents so fondly when you and I used to go to the store on Eglinton together after school. Such a magical store with such exquisite chocolate. I send my most sincere condolences to you and your children and grandchildren. I always loved seeing your mom in recent years at Nortown when I was taking my mom there. A truly wonderful person. Always giving me a big hug.

To the family. I remember spending time with Felicia at some of the downtown recreation events some years back at the JCC. Those were indeed special and memorable moments we shared. She was quite an independent, warm, strong and remarkable person having gone through so much hardship and adversity in her life. May her memory be a blessed one to cherish. Sharing my condolences.
