It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Fira Svirsky on Monday, January 17, 2022, at the age of 82. Described as intelligent, strong, independent, fierce, and caring, Fira was an indispensable influence on her family and community. Fira was born on January 12, 1940, in Krivoy Rog, Ukraine, to Chaim and Elizabeth Kordon. She graduated from Krivoy Rog State Pedagogical University as the only Jew in her faculty and was subsequently a dedicated teacher for over 25 years. After immigrating to Canada in 1990, Fira exhibited her passion for cooking by working as a baker up until retirement which earned her the nickname of ‘Baba Boulka’ among her grandchildren. Fira will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 59 years, Edward; sister, Ida; children, Dmitri and Eugene; grandchildren, Katherine, Maria, Allan, Sofia, and Daniel; and numerous other nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Fira was predeceased by her parents and elder sister Sofa. Those touched by Fira will honor her legacy by cherishing their families, persevering through adversity, and, most importantly, by living life to the fullest.
