Florence (Flo) Miller 1937 – 2023

She lived joyfully.

Flo Miller (nee Sherman) was a generous grandmother, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, cousin, friend, social worker and an artist. She will be sorely missed by her children and their spouses: Allan Miller (Ilana), Alene Clarke (John), Jill Birks (Kenny).

And her siblings: Gloria Samuel (Mark) and Arthur Sherman (Mindy) – Gogi ‘n Art!

She will be remembered with smiles and laughter by all her grandchildren: Danielle Antonaga (Michael) and Adam Miller, Emma, Garrick, Lauren and Wyatt Clarke and Sebastian Birks as well as her great grandchildren, Yosef and Benny.

Flo’s kindness and ebullient spirit fostered many, friendships, too many to mention.

She loved to read, travel, walk, animals, (and anything ‘cute’), art, popcorn and more popcorn. She lived her life to the fullest, facing her cancer diagnosis with genuine appreciation for the life she’d lived, making new friends through her very last days; pure Flo.

Her frequent childlike joy, wonder and enthusiasm was infectious, she will be greatly missed by all. Grandma Flossie aka Flossie Mama was the embodiment of FUN. We were lucky to know her.

Dear Sherman and Miller Families I met Flo at Camp Winnebagoe when we were about 9 or 10, and we have been in touch off and on throughout the years. So very sorry to learn that she has passed away and with her many of my memories. Flo was full of fun and enjoyed life. She will be missed.

Dear Allan, Alene, Jill, Glo, Art, and family: Norm and I are extremely sad with the news of Flo’s passing. She was always welcomed here when she came to Montreal, and she was a major big part of our lives. There is no question that she was my favourite X sister-in-law, and Alison’s favourite aunt. She was Norm’s best neighbour, and certainly the best person to call to remove rodents that showed up in his house. To my late parents, she was a special daughter-in-law…..she even helped me hang pictures when I moved my Mom into a home…she was always there to help. We loved you Flo and won’t ever forget you! Dear Allan, Alene, Jill, Herb and the entire Family, I am so sorry to hear about Flo’s passing and your family’s challenging days as your Mom fought her Cancer. I am sorry I am not there in person but I do want to express my gratitude to Flo as my second Mom growing up on Castlewood and to your entire family. You were truly my second family and for all your help and support through those memorable teen years I will always be grateful and will carry so many great memories. From Flo always making sure she stocked your fridge and pantry with my favourite snacks…… to her selflessly giving us her famous AMC Pacer for weeks away and nights out ….. to her graciously accepting my garbage in your garage whenever I forgot to take mine out on garbage day in order to save me from punishments…….to Flo making sure your Dad took me to the License bureau to get my first Driver’s Licence even though he had already taken Allan earlier in the day….. the stories go on and on. My very deepest condolences on the passing of a special and beloved person. Flo was my friend Jill’s mom but I considered her my friend as well. I had a wonderful time showing her around Hong Kong, where we shared margaritas and she bought a purse shaped like Volkswagen bug. In Toronto, she opened her home to me (“stay as long as you want”) and I admired her decor, sculptures and wall of stylish necklaces. We went to Chinatown for dinner and then had fun browsing a skateboard, poster and animé shop, where Flo was as interested in the merchandise as any teenager. I think we all loved that about her - her openness and interest in everything. She will be sorely missed by all of us.

I shared wonderful adventures with Flo- scrabble, Yad b’yad in Israel, San Miguel with Aunt Ruth, Club Med where she spent her time photographing trees. And more in and about Toronto. Your grief as you buried your mom was palpable ... yet how heartwarming to see how much joy you all derived from Flossiemama's role as mother and sister. And what a privilege for me to have an opportunity to participate. Apparently my husband Jay helped carry the coffin from the hearse - so both of us had an honour . What a beautiful family!

It's been years since we've seen each other and while I never met your mom, I see a beautifully fun and loving deion of her and no doubt she was a gem, and your gem of a mom. I will miss Florence’s wonderful smile. She was my next door neighbour for a few years and she was so kind to me when I had surgery and always made sure to pick me up something while doing errands to help me. She had the most bubbly and energetic personality, so full of life and always happy. I miss her as a neighbour and a friend. She was one of the nicest person anyone could meet. I remember when she got her cat and she would invite me over to visit the cat. I am so sorry. All my condolences to all of her family at this time.
