It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband and father, Fowad (Fred) Basas, on January 29th, 2023.

Fred is survived by his wife, Freda, after 51 years of a loving marriage. He is also survived by his two sons, Martin and Richard.

Fred came to Canada in the 1960s and managed to build up a successful woodworking business over many years. He always faced his challenges with determination and humour. He passed peacefully with his family by his side at the age of 88. He will be sorely missed.

Freda, I’m very sorry to learn of Fred’s passing. My mind goes back to the early days of your move to Toronto with 3 other girls. Fred would be there soon after my arrival and I always enjoyed his company and friendship. I send my best wishes to you and your children.

Douglas Curran

I had left my photography studies at Ryerson, to take a job with Fred at Canadiana Woodworking, on King Street (near Parliament), in May of 1973. Although reluctant to take on an unskilled worker, I persisted and pointed out to Fred that the job offer posted at the Canada Employment offer had been up for more than 2 weeks and remained unfilled. I worked under Fred for 2 1/2 years. Fred was a mentor, at at times a friend, sometimes we fought, but I learned from Fred; more than just woodworking, but about the world beyond Canada, what it meant to be a mensch - and Fred was certainly that. I've taken a good part of Fred with me on through my life. I remain in his debt. There are memories of Fred that will never leave me: one of these is Fred, standing in the middle of Canadiana Woodworking after we moved to a bigger space on Queen street. "Curran Douglas!" he announced to the ceiling, "An English who thinks like a Jew - the worst could ever be!" I could write pages more. There's a movie there.
