Some of my best childhood memories go back to climbing around on the plastic covered couches at Aunty Freda's house with my brother and ALL of my cousins. Ha.... I guess that's why they were covered! But we never ever felt unwelcome, only always loved and wanted. As I got older, that didn't change. My love to all of you. May memories of Freda become blessings forever in your hearts.

I have so many fond memories of Auntie Freda. As a kid, every time she would visit it seemed she was always ready to sew on a button or fix a zipper for me. Seeing her when I visited Israel was like being home. She would always call me “Markeleh”, even as an adult. I loved that! Back in the 90’s I visited my sister in Hawaii. She gave me a pyrex dish full of home cooking for my sister. When I left she said to me, “Bring me back the dish!”. LOL My sister and I had a laugh at that and YES I brought her back the dish. To this day I don’t know why we didn’t pack it in Tupperware. Auntie Freda had a bad back and I’d give her massages. She was a wonderful cook. She would ‘kvell’ when I’d sing songs she knew and sing along with me. (Like “Young At Heart”). And Freda it seems was always young at heart.. I love you Auntie Freda. You are already missed. Sandike, Frumele, Sandra, Sandi, To me you are my niece, friend, confidant and the relationship between us is indescribable yet, precious. And, here we are once more in a bizarre situation. Marvin Miller, my husband died on Tuesday at home in Toronto. My amazing sister Freda died on Wednesday in Toronto. Freda's funeral is scheduled to take place today @ 11:00 a. m. in Toronto. Marvin's funeral is scheduled to take place @ 1:30 today in Paramus N.J. He will be buried next to his parents. Whose funeral should I go to? I'm in N.J. May these two wonderful people go hand in hand together on their next journey. Freda called him Marvele. He called her Freda in a loving voice. Marvin's son David said that Freda pushed him so that he could lead the way. My sister Freda was 18 years older than me. Age didn't matter. She was always there for me. Always. She was genuinley proud of my accomplishments; at graduation from high school, then college, then university. I valued her judgement. It's to her that I read what I had just written, a story a poem, an essay. And she was the first listener when I would read to her what I had just written in Yiddish. We laughed together, cried together, spent precious time together. We shared funny, frivolous moments. But, the most interesting and meaningful moments we spent together were the stories she told me about her life in Lithuania before becoming a Canadian. We talked about Yiddish writers, songs and poetry. Freda's flair for dress is legendary. Freda 's gefilte fish, cheese blintses, chicken soup---yummy. But, to me, the best qualities she exhibited was the love and respect she showed our mother after Chaia Soreh Applebaum Kunigis became a widow. Sandi, you have followed her example. Your devotion and caring helped Freda live a long life. I will be back in Toronto Friday evening. We'll hug with tears in both our eyes.
