Freda Green 1924-2024
Freda (Gusen) Green was born in Winnipeg in 1924, daughter of Morris and Esther Gusen, who immigrated to Canada from Russia & Ukraine. Freda attended the Peretz School, St John’s Tech, and United College in Winnipeg (later part of U Manitoba) and graduated with a degree in English Literature. She moved to Toronto to join her fiance Patrick Green (also from Winnipeg) whom she married in 1946. They had a long and happy marriage of 68 years until Pat’s death in 2014.

Freda’s proudest achievement was her 3 sons: Dr. Jeffrey Green, MD (Donna) of St Thomas, Ont; Prof Kenneth Green, Ph. D. (Sharon) of Vaughan, and Dr. Brian Green, MD of Thunder Bay. She will be dearly missed by her 7 grandchildren: Jacqueline (Adam), Ian, Elizabeth, and Alex (Anne-Marie); Alexander (Keren), Daniel (Leah), and Jonathan (Yael). She was also the proud great-grandmother of 12: Sophie, Judah, Solomon, and Ella; Chana, Binyamin, and Racheli; Emily, Nadav, and Ezra. Gabriel; and Oliver.

Freda and Pat enjoyed an active social life with many friends, travel, and their Muskoka cottage. They were also founding members of Temple Sinai in Toronto, where they made many lifelong friends.

Freda was an avid reader and passed this passion along to her sons. She later worked as a librarian after earning a library degree from Seneca College. Following Pat’s death, Freda remained active, but ultimately spent her last years at Sunrise Retirement Home in Vaughan. She died peacefully January 12, 2024, just 3 months shy of her 100th birthday.
