George and I taught at Sir Wilfrid Laurier Collegiate for many years. However our personal relationship never really took off until those heady years in the 90's with Blue Jays fever at world series pitch. Then, after retirement, George took charge at arranging Laurier Luncheons at the Granite Club. It was here that I came to know him as kind and thoughtful gentleman, that made me regret not associating with him sooner. I will miss our conversations over lunch about practically everything, and am sorry that his final years were spent in ill health. May he rest in peace.

You are an exceptional lady, you were the rock for him when he was ill, and I know you will do whatever you can that is in your power to keep his memory alive. May Hashem be good to you for the rest of your long life. It is hard to imagine my world without one of my oldest and dearest friends not there for me. My deepest condolences go out to Diane and to George's family. This is a very painful loss. I met George at Woburn C. I. in the 1980's and we instantly bonded over our interests in movies and theatre. I was charmed by his wacky sense of humour. I helped vet his theatrical productions when he transferred to Sir Wilfrid Laurier. Over the years, George and I enjoyed Jays games, movies and just generally hanging out. He was the first person I went to a movie with when theatres were starting to open up after the pandemic. We were in touch during his hospital stay by email and short phone calls. I was very fond of George and will miss him dearly.

George held a special place in my heart, and he will be missed. Diane, I will always remember my conversations with George where he proudly confided his deep love and admiration for you, and his gratitude for all that you shared together. Although we have never met, I felt as if I knew a small part of you through him, and I was moved by George’s openness, and the knowledge that he had lived a life filled with your love, caring and friendship. Over the years we shared memories and exchanged familial histories, including those of my late father, Ray Edelstein, and our personal experiences of sitting Shiva from the perspective of our child selves. George was a very good friend and colleague to all who knew him at Laurier Collegiate. Always friendly smile . Always good to be around. He cared about his profession as an English teacher very deeply. Upon retiring he organized bi annual get-togethers of retired Laurier staff so that we could maintain our friendships and get caught up with each others lives. He was indeed a fine friend. I will miss him.

I worked with George for many years in the English Department at Woburn Collegiate. He was always a kind and generous, sometimes very funny, colleague. And we shared a special bond, the fact that we were both Jewish. There were precious few of us at the school in the early days. I know he often went out of his way for students as well. I hope his family is comforted by wonderful memories of George, whom I can see smiling at me even now.

George you were never my teacher, but always my kind of teacher: your wit, your passion for everything you taught and your kind, caring and almost exigent manner of educating brought out the best in all of us at Woburn. Your staff sponsorship of our film club helped make a lot of spectacularly silly movies - some major, memorable mirth - possible. And hanging with you later in life was always inspiring; music, movies, and teaching and politics made our discussions deep, diverse and wonderful. I'll miss your sharp sense of humour and sensitive story-telling style. Mister E., after all your caring kindness, and all the love you shared, you deserved an easier Act Three. George, I remember well your years as Assistant Head of English at Laurier Collegiate. I was Head; I hired you. I think back fondly of those times. I remember, too, your taking me down to Exhibition stadium to see a Blue Jay game in the nascent heady days of Blue Jays baseball, It was cold. You pulled out extra gloves from your bag for me who had no idea what an April evening down by the Lake Ontario could feel like. You 'scored' the game, play by play -- a 4-5-6 double play, etc. Perhaps you were the prototype Blue Jay fan. . I had no idea of what you were doing. Then we went to your sailboat after, had wine and cheese. It was an adventure; you were an adventure. You kept the Laurier Staff together with your ball game outings; and after with your Mandarin lunches in our retirement years Your love and passion for people and comradeship deserved better than a Sunnybrook Hospital ending. Wherever you are, I hope you are scoring the game. Cheers, George. You are fondly remembered,

As I learned to work with George at Laurier CI from 1989-95, I discovered him to be a giving, kind and compassionate individual. His enthusiasm for and knowledge of film and popular culture generated interesting conversations. I enjoyed working with him on theatre projects. He and his dear friend, Peter Ferens, brought so much fun to the English Department at the time. The speeches at his funeral beautifully captured his essence - a good person, a loving friend, a mensch for sure. He was taken too soon. May you rest easy, George, and know that you were loved by many and will be remembered with fondness.

George, my second cousin, and I first met in the 1980s when he popped up in Kansas City, where we lived then, by surprise. George was there because he was following the Blue Jays to different away games. This turned out to be typical of his passion and spontaneity. Over the years we kept in touch and saw each other. I saw George's love of learning and film, his sense of history, and the Edelstein wit and talent for writing. George was especially affectionate with my mom and Aunt Anne, his first cousins, and would see them in Florida and Kentucky. He was always a pleasure to talk with. May his memory be a blessing to Diane and the family.

I am an old, old friend of George's. We went to junior high together and remained close friends thru the end of high school, We went our separate career ways at the university level and sadly allowed our friendship to lapse. When George got sick, Steven Kates notified me. I started calling George in the hospital and regaling him with crazy stories of things that have happened to me that are funny. I was told he liked them which drove me even more than just friendship to try and make his day a bit brighter. I was privileged to see George just a few days before he passed. Seeing him meant more to me than I thought it would. Even though we didn't see each other for 57 years, I will value our friendship always.

I was a classmate of George’s at Ledbury Park Jr High, transferring part way through grade 7 from a downtown senior public school. I found the transition incredibly difficult, had a hard time fitting in. George befriended me when I had few friends, he was wonderfully kind. I remember him with great fondness and eill never forget his kindness. I was really terribly sorry to learn of his death, and sympathize with his family.
