It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of George Stern on Friday, November 24, 2017, peacefully, surrounded by his family. Beloved husband to his loving and devoted wife of 66 years, Judy Stern. Loving father to Paul Stern, and Iris Yashinsky. Adoring and proud grandfather of Jordan, Josh, Noah, Dalia, Elan, and Daniel. Memorial donations may be made to Beit Halochem Canad, Aid to Disabled Veterans of Israel at 905-695-0611, or to the Association for Soldiers of Israel at 416-783-3053.

Date of Funeral: Sunday, November 26, 2017

Time of Funeral: 2:30 PM

Memorial Service Location: Chapel service

Burial Service Location: Shedlover's Young Men Society section.

Shiva Details: Daily from 2-4 pm, and 5:30-8:30 pm. Evening services at 7 pm. Concludes Friday morning December 1st.

A few years ago, on vacation to Budapest, a day was spent visiting the beautifully restored Dohány Street Synagogue. Particularly striking were the many plaques and markers that carried the Stern name. Loss...of family, a community and a familiar way of life., It enabled me to put into focus the memories ad burdens that must have been carried forth by survivors such as George. Yet he bore them with pride, resilience and a debonair manner. Rest in peace.

Dear Judy and family, I was so very saddened to hear of George's passing. a wonderful devoted husband, loving father adored grandfather. George was always so proud of his family, incredible brave story of his life and the gratitude that he survived. I admired him and always enjoyed having a chat with him when I saw him Shul.

It was my great honour to interview Mr. Stern for 2 articles for the Jewish Tribune, a few years ago. As I am myself the child of Hungarian Holocaust survivours, I was touched by his sincerity and warmth as well as by deep commitment to his family and also to Jewish military veterans. I am saddened to hear of his passing and am sending my condolences to Judy and the family. Mr. Stern was a remarkable human being. He will be missed.
