Gerald (Alfred) Haberer

Gerry was a dear friend for 30 years. His generosity of spirit and mischievous sense of humour were always present, and it was an honour to know him and his family. We miss him deeply.

Your family was such a big part of my childhood and I have countless happy memories spent with the Haberers. Sharon, Kym, Marc (and families), I’m so sorry for your loss.

Gerry and I started our jobs at Teknion only a few days apart in Dec.84 as executives, him in Finance and I in Manufacturing. Although we developed a mutual admiration we had personal turbulent times because of the of extraordinary success and resulting growth of the company the receivables were almost invariably shorter than the payables, resulting in long delays in payments to “my” suppliers which caused serious arguments between the two of us. The fact is that his tight control on the finances at that time, and later, was absolutely essential for the future of Teknion, without which the company could have succumbed. Throughout the last 37 years we never stopped to be friends and we had very memorable times together from venturing together into powder skiing at Whistler and putting our lives at risk because we were not as good as we thought. At one point when we were skiing with powder up to well above our knees Gerry, who was a much better skier than I, lost his balance and ended up sitting on his bum. He just couldn’t get up because by this time the powder was taller then him. I had to call on skills that I didn’t have and after more or less dramatic moments we were able to keep going. We skied together quite a few times mostly in Quebec and one time he came with his daughter Kim. He was the only man (I swear) that I ever slept together in the same bed during one of our ski outings in Quebec when we realized that we had more people than beds available. I am sure that most of his friends know that Gerry was a financial wizard. As a matter of fact he was accused by a misguided President of “voodoo accounting “. I also consider a fact that if I now enjoy a comfortable retirement I owe it to certain extent to his constant advice. Finally I very much enjoyed sailing with Gerry on my boat, sometimes with his friend Aubrey Lowenstein and only once with Sharon. When we did just the two of us he would get more excited as the boat would heel more (incline). I am so sad to have lost such an amazing uncle. He was such a wonderful person and helped me in so many ways. I will always remember the great times I had with him and he will be deeply missed in my life.

Memories From Our Wine Loving Buddies. A group of us got together once a month or so to celebrate friendship, enjoy old wines and interesting food. I informed our group on the passing of Gerry. Although our Teknion days seem long ago, I still remember that he always had time for advising this young pup with his skillful expertise - along with a wonderful dry sense of humor.
