His passion for his work and the academic rigour with which he persued his research were outstanding. I make regular use of the lessons he taught me on how to clearly and effectively communicate to this day. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Barbara I want to let you know how very sorry I am to hear of Gerry's death. He was a colleague who was always there for me and for our Critical Disability Studies program. Without his wise guidance and mentoring at the beginning as we created the program I am quite convinced the program at York would never have been the viable and thriving program that it remains. He was able to so clearly define what we needed and why and the way of structuring it in particular ways. I will miss Gerry. My thoughts are with you and your family at this time. Marcia Riouc

Jerry Barkow

Gerry was so full of plans, of things to do now that he was retired. We talked (via email) of his doing a biography, of his trying his hand at writing fiction. He was already an important figure in Canadian anthropology when the MS struck, and he still accomplished much, even visiting Dalhousie when he was in a chair to talk to my seminar on disability studies. My wife Irma retired recently and we had been talking about visiting Toronto and seeing Gerry and Barb. Barb, whose epithet must be "patient heroism." My sympathy for his family, and my congratulations for having had him in your lives.

I am so sorry, Barbara. I came across the obituary notice by accident today. I am Gerald's first cousin, although I never knew him well. The last time I saw him was at the gathering following Artie's death, and over coffee with my mother (who died in 2008) the next day, and I met you then. Wendy Gold Mill

I am very sorry to hear of Gerry's passing. He was a great colleague and mentor for me. The first anthropologist of disability studies I ever met, back in the mid 1990s and I was still a doctoral student. We continued in touch and I'm sorry to hear he is gone.
