Henrich Rafael

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Henrich Rafael, Holocaust survivor in the early morning of Monday, February 21st,2022.

He was born in Romania on November 11th, 1928 and was a devoted husband of the late Eugenia Rafael. He was a very loving father to his son Tom and his wife Kathy Rafael, and his daughter Erica and her husband Abraham Guterman. Loving grandfather (Papa) to Andrea and her husband Bryan, Aliza and her husband Jordan, Karen and her husband Craig, and Mark. Loving great grandfather to Mason, Sam, Gavin, Adam, Blake and Spencer. He will be greatly missed by his long time companion Lidia Gaspar. A private graveside funeral will be held at Pardes Shalom Cemetery. The family will be observing Shiva privately.

Memorial donations may be made to the Association for the Soldiers of Israel (416-783-3053) or to the charity of your choice.

Having seen Henry’s face light up when I told him that his “Cookie” (Aka Andrea) was my daughter’s nursery teacher about 14 years before, and then having the opportunity to do a FaceTime call for him with Andrea during one of the Kensington place lockdowns, was one of the most touching things I took part in last year, and it was obvious how much his family meant to him. His face lit up when he saw Andrea and each time I saw him and mentioned her name to him the reaction was the same. Sending love and hugs at this sad time to the entire family.

Most of us by now have lost both our parents. We all mourn the loss but then it's time to celebrate their life. Henrich Rafael was fortunate to live to the ripe age of 93-a number that most of us would be happy to accept. More important than the number is how he lived and the love and attention that he received from Tom and Erica and all his grandchildren right to the end. We should all be so lucky.
