Peacefully, at North York General Hospital on December 9^th, 2020, age 95, Holocaust survivor Howard Kleinberg cherished and celebrated every moment of his life since being liberated from Bergen Belsen, Germany on April 15, 1945. He leaves behind his precious wife and partner of 70 years, Nancy; beloved father and father-in-law to Bernie & Anna; Brian & Simmi; Marla & Jack Samuel; Ira and Mindy. Mourned by loving grandchildren Natalie Kleinberg, Joshua Kleinberg, Ariella & Dani Goldstein, Rabbi Effie & Tamar Kleinberg, Talya & Dave Apter, Eliana & Zach Husynni, Adam & Galit Samuel, Aryeh & Chana Samuel, Racheli & Koby Spiegel, Erin Kleinberg and Mickey Lungu, and Adam and Jackie Kleinberg. Blessed with several great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, numerous friends – young, old, Jewish, Gentile, religious, secular – who all adored, admired and respected him. Predeceased by his parents and 9 siblings. Howard had an irrepressible smile and a warmth to match. Howard was an incredible man. Howard was on my March of the Living bus in 2014. The lessons I learned from him will stay with me for the rest of my life. Howard was full of love, bringing light into the darkest possible situations. My condolences to the whole family. Baruch Dayan Emet.

Uncle Howard was my wife's uncle but I claimed him as my own. One could not meet a kinder and sweeter and happier person in life. His strength, courage and determination to build a dynasty through his family, having survived the Holocaust, represents a chapter in the history of the Jewish People that exemplifies our national survival. My condolences to the whole family. Howard and my father Yitzchak/Irving Goldhar Z”L came to Canada in 1947 in the first group of Holocaust survivor refugees to be allowed into Canada. They remained close friends for the rest of their lives. We will all miss him.

Marilyn and I first met Mr. Kleinberg @ Pearson Airport in January 1991 when we came back from Romania with our daughter Shayna and Bernie and Anna returned with us with Josh. Mr. and Mrs. Kleinberg were there as the official welcoming committee, with warm arms and beaming faces, for their family addition as well as for ours. We quickly saw Mr. Kleinberg as an effusive and positive spirited person (as is Mrs. Kleinberg) in everyday existence as was humanly possible. He transcended the horrific past he endured to live his life in Toronto, Canada to the fullest. Both he and Mrs. Kleinberg were rewarded with their children and grandchildren. Baruch Dayan Haemet. Kleinberg family, I was very sad to hear about the passing of Howard. I knew him from Kensington and always chatted with him when visiting my dad. He always greeted me with the warmest smile and we had some great talks. He was such a kind and friendly man with a chronic smile. He always asked if I rode my motorcycle and I promised to take him for a ride when the weather improved but unfortunately it didn’t happen. May you all find the strength to deal with this loss and he Rest In Peace. My father Jack also sends his deepest condolences and will miss him as they often spoke.

Dorothy & David Samuel

"Friendship" seems too pallid a word and "Love" too romantic, although there are elements of both in Howard's and our relationship. He had life experiences and religious convictions that were far different from our own yet we had a family relationship and a rapport that transcended all differences. His cheery smile, his frequent pontifications that invariably began with the phrase " the thing is this --", and his ability and willingness to express his views on most any subject were refreshing and were what you could expect whenever you were in his company. He never forgot where he came from nor the road that he and Nancy had traveled to get to the rich and rewarding life that together they had fought for and earned and which they both so appreciated; and they were driven to give back by telling their story to countless young people so that they would "never forget" and who in turn came to revere Howard as the mentor and historian that he had become. Our heartfelt condolences to Nancy, Bernie, Bryan. Marla and the whole family. His life was truly a blessing and he will terribly be missed by the Samuel family and by countless others.

Dear Kleinberg Family, Baruch Dayan HaEmet. Chaim was a Prince of a man. Is it possible that those eyes twinkled like that for everybody? He had a unique way of connecting with you and wow.....instant bond and affection. He was our daughter's, Kayla, March of the Living Holocaust survivor on her trip. No words could fully describe Howard. I was privileged to know him for 50 years. He was one of a kind, to know him was like gaining a best friend for life. I had the pleasure of seeing Chaim and Nancy almost every time I visited Kensington as I often timed my visits to align with the end of lunch. Howard was a man of infinite generosity, kindness and menschlechkeit. Our families go back a very long way together, to the liberation of Nancy, Howard and my mother from Bergen Belsen. During all the years since, seeing Howard was always a highlight of my day. Dear Nancy and the entire Kleinberg family, I am so sorry to hear about Howard's passing. Not only was Howard a lantzman of my Zeida, Dave Dreksler, he was also one of the survivors on my bus during March of the Living in 2010. Howard was always a beacon of happiness and warmth. He had a smile that was contagious and the lessons he taught me on the March will remain with me forever. My deepest condolences to the whole family. May his memory be a blessing.

I am so sad to hear of Howard’s passing. Growing up around Howard, Nancy, my father, and the other Holocaust survivors in my life, showed me the resilience of the human spirit and goodness. Howard was the embodiment of this. He and Nancy understood the importance of sharing their tragic stories and survival so that others will know and be able to continue sharing it.
