It was sad to learn of the passing of Israel Kleiner this morning, a friend my wife and I have known for more than three decades. We first met in the summer of 1988 at a workshop on the relationship of history of mathematics and mathematics education held in Kristiansand, Norway, organized by our mutual friend Otto Bekken. However, I have known the name of Israel before meeting him in Kristiansand through his published paper on the evolution of group theory and a to-be-published paper on the evolution of the function concept. Thus, I had a lot of questions to ask him and to discuss with him, to all of which he kindly and aptly offered me answers, amply indicating his scholarship and erudition. He was so generous in sharing his wisdom and knowledge with a novice whom he met for the first time. From then on, we became good friends. Fung Kit and I were delighted to meet up with him and his wife Nava in a number of international conferences in the ensuing years, and we kept up a correspondence in between, from which I benefited much. The last time we met was in Uppsala, Sweden, in the summer of 2004. I was expecting to meet him again in future meetings, but that never materialized. The last time we wrote to each other was in January of 2021 during the pandemic that turned the whole world upside down. At the time I was thinking maybe we would continue to exchange emails as we did before, and that I can continue to enjoy learning from his scholarship and erudition. Then the sad news came, and I can no longer learn from him. Yet, I should feel grateful that I had Israel as a friend for these many years. He had lived a fulfilling life. Nava and members of the Kleiner family, please accept the sincere condolences from Fung Kit and me.
