Dear Benedict Family I am so devastated to heart about the passing of Jesse. He was such an amazing kid. I worked at Westmount Collegiate for many years and had the privilege of seeing Jesse in action on a daily basis . On his first day of grade 9 Jesse inquired about becoming a Grade Rep and every year thereafter he aspired to bigger and better positions. He was involved in all areas of school life and was the life of the party. I knew he had greatness in him. He could focus on a million tasks at once and he made it look so easy. He became President of the Student Council in Grade 12 and he aced it. I will never forget Jesse and his potential.

He was a leader throughout his entire life and always knew how to motivate people in the right direction. I look back at my middle school and high school days with Jesse and think about all the amazing things he accomplished and all the people he touched. Rest in peace Jesse. I have nothing but fond memories of you from camp, work, and even the hang outs at each other’s houses. I remember visiting you in your Thornhill Woods house as you told me you were in the middle of a move. It was such a fun chill and we said we would chill again. And we did. That’s what made you such a great friend. Jesse was my supervisor at the JCC. It was Jease who made me feel comfortable at my first staff training, because I didn’t know anyone however, I knew Jesse from camp which helped me feel less anxious. The way Jesse played Justin Bieber’s song “Sorry” at my first staff training in 2016 just made me laugh and feel so welcomed into a new environment. Everyone just started dancing and singing with you, I was shy at the time, but you saw that in me and helped me break out of my shell , I actually started dancing and singing that song and having fun with it, not knowing anybody but you were all I needed. You created an energy that made me fit in right away. It was because of you I instantly felt like I had friends, and accepted into the JCC family. We would hang out with each other after shifts. As Jesse’s career moved toward he left the JCC and moved to Lifetime which is another pool/community centre. Even though he switched jobs, we still remained friends. And he even ran my recerts. I remember taking it at Lifetime where he was the manager in aquatics. I’m so happy I went to him for my resert he was so happy to see me. I remember him making the resert so fun, it didn’t even feel like work even though I couldn’t breathe from time swim. He just made everything so much better. I remember catching up with him when the resert was done. We were catching up on where we are in life and what our goals were for the future. He had plans on finishing school and growing in his career so did I. We would often talk on social media and catch up and I told him, I got a position at a new pool as well as a program leader similar to what his position at lifetime was, and he was so happy for me. Im happy that Jesse got to see what I have learned from him as I was able to grow into a career into aquatics as well. However, no one can ever run a pool deck the way Jesse can. I will miss him, a good person taken from us too soon? My condolences to the Benudiez family.

I remember getting on the bus to NBB for my first time and just hearing this loud singing from this guy I didn’t know. Jesse was the first one on the bus and I remember every single persons face light up when they got on the bus and saw Jesse. I knew right away the type of person he was. I had the pleasure of going to camp with Jesse for several years as well as high school and staying friends afterwards. Jesse was the most likeable, friendly, trustworthy and strongest person I’ve ever met and there is no friendship like one with Jesse. Jesse was a leader to many and had the biggest heart. I knew Jesse from Camp Northland. I was the head of Drama from 2009-2011 and Jesse absolutely loved being in the plays. He always auditioned with so much enthusiasm, belting out his song at the top of his lungs (despite not being the most amazing singer) but he did it with so much charisma that we always made sure he had a place to shine on stage, and wow, did he ever light up that stage. He gave it his all every time he walked into the room, he never did anything half asked. Whenever I saw Jesse he always made sure to give me the biggest hug, as if he knew it could turn someone’s day from bad to good. Jesse just absolutely radiated love and joy. He always offered a helping hand, even when it wasn’t asked of him, because that was the type of person he was. A kind, beautiful, loving soul, whose life will continue to echo through all those who knew him. His memory will truly be a blessing. Sending all of my love.

The entire community truly is feeling the loss of Jesse - someone who touched more lives in 22 years than most will in a lifetime. I had the privilege of being on student council with Jesse and can never forget the way he lit up the room and our meetings every week. Jesse didn’t know I was struggling then. He didn’t know how out of place I felt. He didn’t need to - without knowing anything Jesse managed to go out of his way to make a girl 2 years older smile and feel like everything was okay. Then I was fortunate enough to overlap with him in Israel 3 years ago, again in a time when I needed kindness and love. And again, through few interactions, Jesse’s smile, hugs and contagious energy made the world feel like a better place. My words come from not truly knowing Jesse well and only spending a bit of time with him. But it speaks volumes to the person he was and the impact he made. In just a few interactions, Jesse made my life better. I am sending so much strength to your family today and along the grieving journey. He is always with you and will live on in the kindness, joy and love we will all try to show in his honour.

Dear KC, Jamie, Justin and family, we are so sorry for your tremendous loss. Jesse was a kind, caring and inspirational young man. I will never forget the encouragement and kindness he showed to our youngest son when he was his counsellor at Camp NBB. Jesse got in the water with our son who was in 1-1 at the time, and walked beside him encouraging him the whole way while he worked toward completing his swim test.
