BALABAN, Larry – On Sunday, November 20, 2016 in Florida. Larry Balaban, beloved husband of Bernice Karn. Loving father of Erin, and Marc. Dear brother and brother-in-law of Elaine and Rick Dubin, and Sheila and the late Irving. Larger than life, loved by all, he will be dearly missed. At Steeles Memorial Chapel, (350 Steeles Ave., W.), for service on Thursday, November 24, at 11:30 a.m. Interment Mt. Sinai Memorial Park, Pride of Israel Synagogue sectio. Memorial donations may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation at 416-489-7111, or the Jewish National Fund at 416-638-7200.

Dear Bernice, Erin, Marc and the Balaban family. I am in an incredible state of shock since hearing today of Larry's sudden passing. I met Larry through business but very quickly knew he was more than a client...he became my friend. Larry would call and ask if he could drop by for a few mins.. He promised it would be quick.. Maybe 10 mins.. Just to pick up a brochure or ask a few questions about his next fabulous vacation ...And to drop off my favourite Starbucks vanilla latte.. We all know Larry loved to talk and those 10 mins easily became an hour talking about travel he would one day book .. or just taking a true and caring interest asking about my kids and family. I am thankful and lucky for having known Larry. His bright smile and cheerful disposition were always present. It was an honor and a privledge to call him my friend. May your wonderful memories help carry you through the incredibly difficult days ahead. I met Larry at Chapters, and although we were in a different parts of the business, I always felt welcome and encouraged to speak with him. Dear Bernice and Balaban Family, I am so sorry for your loss. My fondest memories of Larry were on our road trips looking at retail stores. First off I learnt very quickly, never let Larry drive and secondly always come on an empty stomach as food was plentiful. The one thing I enjoyed the most though was our talks. Larry had such a love for family, life, travel and laughter. He will truly be missed.

Bernice and the Entire Balaban Family, please accept my deepest condolences on the sudden and unexpected passing of Larry. I first met and dealt with Larry back in my Tridel days (more years than I want to admit too). We met at a plaza in Newmarket. Larry was working on behalf of a tenant. Who knew that our paths would continue to cross for the better part of 35 years after that. Larry was always upbeat and quick with the rebuttals. I'll truly miss his smiling face and heartfelt laughter but will always have fond memories of Larry.

Whenever I got notified that my voice mail was full, I could guarantee there was a message from him waiting for me. He made me laugh and smile and had a heart of gold. Larry and I worked together during his years at Shoppers Drug Mart. Larry was always the centre of the tornado of activity that comprised our daily lives. Larry would bound into the office with armfuls of curiousities & delicacies & would swoop from office to office with words of encouragement & cheer & be off to the next before another word could be spoken. It was often suggested that we sew bells to the toes of his shoes so that we could have a hope of keeping track of his whereabouts.
