Mark (Max) SCHECTER  כֹּהֵן

Mark passed away peacefully at Hill House Hospice on April 18, 2023 at fifty-three years of age.

Son of the late John z”l and late Betty Schecter z”l, Mark was the beloved brother of the late Sidney z”l, Gary, Larry and Robin Schecter and member of a large extended family.

Born with developmental challenges, Mark lived a life filled with love, companionship, comradery, laughter, spiritual fulfillment and so much more. Mark did not have a conventional life, but he was fortunate to live a full, satisfying life.

Shortly after his birth, Mark lived in a small group home on the banks of the Moira River in Belleville, where he was treated with the utmost respect and showered with love. He eventually transitioned into the Reena network. Over the years, Mark lived in a number of Reena residences, including Manadon Drive, Clifton Avenue and finally, Weldrick Avenue.

He was active, attending synagogue, sporting and entertainment events, attended summer camp and participated in daily sporting and other activities at the Lebovic Jewish Community Campus and the Toby & Henry Battle Developmental Centre

Mark’s had a terrific sense of humour, only not in the traditional sense. Like his father, Mark was a practical joker. He loved to taunt and play mischievous pranks on staff and fellow residents.

The family wishes to thank his Reena family for the exemplary care provided to our brother over the years, especially the many compassionate, devoted caregivers who supported him. The family would also like to acknowledge the many Reena residents, truly his brothers and partners-in-crime, who formed Mark’s social network throughout his life.

We would like to express our appreciation for the care given to our brother by the medical staff, nurses and other health care professional at Mackenzie Health.

Mark’s final days were spent in comfort, embraced by the angels who make Hill House Hospice such a special place for our family. Mark passed away in the same room as our beloved father, Johnny, whose spirit was no doubt present to receive Mark and take him on his final journey.

Graveside services will be held at Pardes Chaim Cemetery on Thursday, April 20th at 12:00 p.m.

The family will privately observe Shiva.

Guests are invited to meet immediately after the service at What-A-Bagel, 10815 Bathurst Street (corner of Elgin Mills and Bathurst) for lunch.
