We are sad to announce the passing of Mates Cohen at 97 years of age. Husband of the late Betty Cohen zl.

Father of Abe (Dale) Cohen and Bernie (Bobbie) Cohen. Loving Zaidie of Sara (Toly), Dani, Erin and Kaylin. Devoted great zaidie of Harel and Elijah Dvorkin and Naomi Cohen

A family graveside funeral will be held Sunday, August 16, 2020

Memorial donations may be made to Adath Israel Synagogue at 416-635-5340 or the charity of your choice.

We would like to thank the staff of 4-South at Cummer Lodge for the wonderful and loving care Mates received.

I grew up knowing Mates, he lived across the street from my Aunt and Uncle. My parents used to visit him and his wife on a regular basis. I am truly sorry, he was such a nice man, he will be missed.

Mates Cohen was one of my favourite people. I sat next to him toward the back of the Shul He had an aisle set and he saved the seat next to him for me. He was a very bright , happy person .Content and proud with what he had accomplished in his life and mostly with the success of his family , son Doctor , granddaughter who graduated some years ago as a lawyer.Perfect gentleman who did not suffer fools.. Always welcoming with a handshake and smile I have not seen him for a long time and am greatly saddened that he has passed May you be comforted among the mourners of Zion and Israel Myer Betel

My deepest condolences to you. Mates was a very special man. I met him at Adath Israel when I was saying kaddish for my father in 2006. Every morning at breakfast, he poured himself a cup of tea. and automatically poured a cup for me without even being asked. To me, it was the kindest, most thoughtful gesture. Over the years, I always made sure to go up to him where he sat at the back of the sanctuary and wish him Shabbat Shalom. I've missed seeing him in recent years

I remember Mates very fondly from my Adath Israel days; he will be greatly missed. Mates greeted everyone with a warm smile every morning, and was always happy to pass around some good jokes. He took pleasure in brightening up everyone's day and was a real mensch. I hope you are comforted by many memories of happy times spent with him, by the love and support of family and friends, and by the knowledge that he is in a better place. May you be comforted among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem, may Mates' memory always be a blessing and an inspiration, and may he have a peaceful rest.

My condolences to the Cohen family. Every Shabbat I would approach Mates sitting at the back of the shul and we would converse in Hebrew for a while. He was sweet gentle man and was called on for many alyot as a Cohen in the shul. He will be missed.

We were very saddened to hear of Mates' passing.... for many years we sat across the aisle....in later years he started calling me Motek and would sweetly kiss my hand....he would take out a folded piece of paper and give it to Joe...of course it had jokes on it but he would say it's not for me ... once he started to sit in the back, he would be my first stop after me getting my seat...of course there would only be 5 people in the shul and we would always laugh at that...he was a true and fine gentleman...so very proud of his family and the life he had made...he was grateful and content....and always a joy to speak with..... this is a very sad loss and we would like to express our sincere condolences to the entire family....may your memories give you strength at this difficult time.... I got to know Mates sitting at the back of the chapel with him on many mornings. He was a gentlemen and always greeted me warmly each day. So sorry to hear about your Dad. Mates was the sweetest man. I used to sit with him at the back of the sanctuary at Adath Israel because he used to sit alone. When I walked in and greeted him with a hug he always gave me his siddur when I walked into the sanctuary so I would be on the right page. I will really miss him. May he Rest In Peace where his legs will not pain him anymore.
