It is with great sadness that we inform you that Max Slivka passed away on Sunday, April 18th, 2021 in his sleep at the Palliative Care Unit at Baycrest Hospital. He is survived by his wife, Naomi Slivka Stein, who was lovingly by his side until his last breaths, his brother, Leo, as well as his children, Jonathan and Mikey, daughters-in-law, Atessa and Aarti, and grandchildren, Sacha and Simone. He fought a long battle with illness, never with a complaint and always with the utmost optimism. He will be remembered as a bright and charming man who livened up the room, schmoozing with friends and family always with a joke and a smile. Due to the quarantine restrictions, a small private ceremony will be held for him at the Steeles Memorial cemetery on Monday, April 19th at 2:00 pm. As Max was a social creature at his core who loved his friends and family dearly, it would mean a great deal to have you join the service via a live stream (smclive.ca).

Our condolences to all who are missing Max. We had the pleasure of knowing him mainly through Jon and Mike. A memory that shines through is Max joyfully presenting Jon with a beautiful, shiny canoe as a Bar Mitzvah gift at Casa Loma, of all places. Though it was long ago, the beam of his smile that day remains. We are glad to have known him and thankful for the role he played in raising two tremendous young men who we are lucky to count as friends.

My dear friend Max, it was a privilege to be considered by him to be his friend. A quick 50 yrs ago we met at the University of Waterloo Arts coffee shop long lasting only hijacked by his illness. I knew Jono & Mikey before they were born & it's no accident that they turned out so well. Jonathan, Mikey and families, Condolences on the passing of your dad. My favourite memory of Max was in the early, early days of our babysitting Co-op. One afternoon, there was a knock at the door and it was Max. I invited him in and we talked for a while, maybe 20 minutes or so and then he finally said "okay I should get the boys and we should leave." I said "Max - the boys are not here." I don't know how he kept track of them all as he never repeated the same one twice. Max was, quite simply, Marvelous. A whirling dervish of mercurial insights, thoughts and observations, all founded in his superior, eclectic mentality, Max was a professor, office furniture supplier, economist, and bon vivant. One could always look to him for sage advice, keen analysis, and perspective. His good humour acted as a sub-carrier wave to everything he said, enriching the quality of his every communication.
