Dear Ephry (& Merkur family et al), How sad I was to learn of Mel’s passing. We knew one another since pre-university days. We were in the K class together at FHCI. I also remember the days when your parents, Mel and you all lived in Cedarvale. I also remember the sad day when your little baby brother passed away. I have many, many fond memories, however, of Mel. The last time we spoke was when we ran into one another and conversed for a while at Miriam’s bookstore. What a “gute neshama” Mel was. My heart goes out to all of you on Mel’s passing. Hamakom yenachem etchem b'toch she'ar avelai Tziyon Vi'yerushalayim. "May God comfort you among the other mourners of Zion and Jerusalem." As I am highly vulnerable and follow Covid prevention protocols, I regret that I cannot attend the Shiva to express my condolences in person.

To the family. Mel z"l was a few years older than me but I remember him well from the Forest Hill school days. I recall him as a friendly and nice person. May his memory be for a blessing.

I could not have imagined having a better father-in-law than Mel. From day 1 he treated me like his own son. He was the most generous person I have ever known, always asking me if I needed "walk-around cash" but even more generous with his time and his love. He was so kind and warm-hearted, always trying to find a way to bring a smile to the faces of all those around him with clever wit and sometimes silly gags. With his grandchildren he became a little kid again, playing games, building forts and singing nursery rhymes. They would love every moment and he cherished them. His phone calls will be sorely missed with his thought-provoking comments and deep analysis of my football team. His legacy lives on in all of us. My condolenscences to Sherry, Mark, Joel, Michael & Ephry. I wish you all a long life. Love always, Darren x

I wish I could be there to share thoughts, feelings and experiences with your family, but we are in Israel right now. Mel was very big hearted. Mel was a great Torah scholar, very charitable, very very friendly, a disseminator of books of Jewish wisdom to many college and university libraries, ready to help in any way, always there to comfort the mourners and a person filled with ideas and suggestions on how to improve someone's lot in life. His book on MD, helped many people. May his memory be blessed and may he rest in peace in the lofty levels of the World Above.

I am so sad to hear of Mel's passing. I have not seen him in many years but I have great memories of him from our days at USY at Beth Shalom synagogue. He had a good heart and was a friend to everyone and a great inspirational leader. He will be missed.

To the Merkur family: I had not seen Mel for quite some time but hearing of his passing brought back fond memories of our days in USY, at Camp Ogama and our USY camp at Camp Ramah last week of August. He was a fun, happy, energetic pleasure to be with, to laugh with and to enjoy being in his presence. May you all be strengthened by the many fond memories and the many cherished moments.

We are so sorry to hear about the passing of Mel, our nice, gentle, always smiling neighbour. We often saw each other in the backyard and he never hesitated to greet and ask how is everyone doing. It will be hard not to see Mel sitting on the patio again, praying or just embracing nature, smiling, or happily talking to his grandchildren on the phone, which he seemed to really enjoy. To the Merkur Family....my memories of Mel go way back to USY days in the late 50’s and early 60’s. He was always friendly and understanding of this kid from Hamilton when we met with the Toronto group. I am so sorry to read that he has passed away. Dear Merkur Family, A few months ago by Sukkot I ate a meal with your father at the Weinberg house it was Hoshana Raba I remember it being on a Friday. Ive been going to the Weinbergs for years and never heard of the famous Tzaddik and righteus jew "Mel" whom the Weinberg treasured as a friend of the family for years, I believe Hashem was giving me the opportunity and a ever lasting message to meet your father at this point in my life. IT was truly the most memorable last meal for me with your father ,l will never forget "MEL" he was a true tzaddik he understood me so well and told me things about my birthday and what power I have I thought no one would get me but your father understood me so well later a few months after that meal I would have to remind myself of what he said and use it in my life the power He saw right through my soul and who I was. My mother said he was very perceptive but I believe the truly righteous jews the one who learn Torah like Mel Have special Ruach Hakodesh( Divine Providence) from Hashem. He talked to me torah that whole meal, he pulled me in I was so inspired and in Awe. Mel passed away on a Friday truly righteous people pass and go right into Gan Eden your father was pure he donated a library to shul and even helped my parents at some point which they later told me he saw through people also because he felt for people and helped people out . I had originally met Mel long before I married and our re-connection was a comfort during my grieving. He was most generous and insisted on co-sponsoring a year of prayers in Harvey````s name. I am so heartbroken to learn about my friend Mel “The Professor” as my mom would call him, passing. We spent many nights enjoying a good cigar and a glass of scotch. I came upon Mel one afternoon at Chez Tabac, on Avenue Rd, across from the LCBO in the late 1990’s. We hit it off right away! Mel was the kind of guy that could light up the room, talk your ear off, and love you like a brother! During the past few years even though we did not get together as often and reminisce about what was and what could be, we would keep in touch through a quick phone call, just to say I love you! like a brother from another mother!
