It is with deep sadness that the Rattner family shares the sudden death of our dear Sam/Shmuel/Dad on September 5th, 2021. Sam was a fun-loving and caring soul to all who met him. Hard-working; warmhearted; supportive; humble. Big smile, with an even bigger heart. Born in 1948 in Montreal, Quebec. Pre-deceased by his proud parents, William and Sarah (nee Greenberg). Best big brother to Tina. Sam met the love of his life, Gabi, when he was 17 years old at Wagar High School. The story goes that Sam appeared at the doorway of Gabi’s classroom and she turned to her girlfriend, having never spoken to Sam, and told her she would marry him one day. They married in 1971 and built a life and family together. Sam was a devoted and very proud dad to Marla and Maxxine, instilling in them a strong work ethic and a belief in ‘going for it’ in life. Sam’s early work life in sales and marketing would take the family to live in New Jersey, Calgary, and finally, Toronto. Sam started the first large-scale biscotti manufacturing company in Canada in the early 1990s, Greenlake Baking Company, outfitting hundreds of popular and independent stores, restaurants and coffee shops across Canada with the most delicious biscotti. For over 15 years, he has been the Chief Espresso Officer at Faema, combining his amazing people skills and knack for sales with his passion for coffee. To know Sam was to love him. He, too, loved his extended family, friends and colleagues. While Sam was an adventurer at heart —  he loved to ride his motorcycle with his riding buddies and travel the world with Gabi — his favourite place to be was with his family. We will miss his ‘wise words,’ big bear hugs, and unconditional love. The family would like to thank the caring paramedics and staff at St. Joseph’s Health Centre, especially nurses Claire and Joy, for their exceptional care in their time of need. Memorial donations may be made to a charity close to Sam’s heart: The Yonge Street Mission, Distress Centres of Greater Toronto or Baycrest.
