Sara Rosenzweig (nee Grunebaum) 1930-2022
Sara Rosenzweig was born in Oszwiencim, Poland in 1930 to doting parents, David and Vitte Grunebaum. She was 9 years old when the Holocaust swept through Europe and she lost her entire family by the age of 13, her parents and younger brother Izchak. Sara survived the nightmare of the Auschwitz concentration camp and was liberated at the age of 15. Together with other young survivors she made Aliya to Israel where she received schooling and a home. In Israel she married the love of her life, Shmuel Rosenzweig and they emigrated to Toronto, Canada in 1952. Sara was a devoted wife and mother, married for 64 years. She and Shmuel raised two children, Vitti Hendel, and the late Eli David. They lived to enjoy grandchildren, Raz Esther, Moshe, Yizchak, Danielle, and Jonah. Sara was a brave and capable woman. She appreciated the privilege of living and made every minute count. She was a good friend to everyone who met her and nothing brought her more joy than to bring joy and comfort to others. She shared her story and passed on the importance of her Jewish identity to her children and grandchildren. For her this was her responsibility. I know she is in the hearts of all who met her. She is survived by her daughter Vitti Rosenzweig Kones, and son-in-law Matti Kones, and grandchildren Raz Esther, Moshe, Yizchak and Tohar, Danielle, and Jonah. She will be sorely missed. With much gratitude to her devoted caregiver Michelle Medida and Sara’s girls. Memorial donations may be made to the Association for Soldiers of Israel-416-783-3053.
