Auntie Sylvia wss a woman of inner strength, intelligence, and candor. She was not born with a silver spoon in her mouth, being orphaned at a very young age and raised by her older sister, "Auntie Yetta." She became a prominent obstetric + nurse, and provided sound advice to many in and beyond our community. She did many חסדים quietly. Auntie Sylvia had a very powerful belief in Judaism and lived successfully, without being influenced on matters of faith and Jewish values by the outer world in which she worked. She was a realist, and never backed down from calling things as she saw them. Perhaps the greatest testament to Auntie Syliva's committment is her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren who continue in the דרך הישר alongside their working in the outer world. I first met "Aunt to be Sylvia" when she and Uncle Al, ז"ל, were engaged. She would fly to Toronto from Buffalo Friday afternoons, and Uncle Al would pick her up at the old (2 story) Malton airport for a שבת with the extended Spiegel family. I suspect that I was taken along for the ride to permit my mother, ז"ל, the opportunity to prepare for שבת without frequent distractions. That goes back approximately 70 years ago. I have known Auntie Sylvia virtually my whole life. She is and will continue to be missed. המקום מנחם אתכם בתוך שאר אבילי ציון וירושלים

My Dearest Cousins - R' Shmuel, Dovid, Elliot and Rebbetzin Frumet, Your mother was a tower of strength and an inspiration to us! I of course remember Yom Tov with you at 90 Bannockburn, your parents devotion - first to Shaarei Tefilah and then to Mirsky's, and Auntie Sylvia was the first - actually the ONLY - frum Nurse I remember as a child! What a beautiful legacy she has left, with and for all of you. How amazing; from Buffalo to DOROS of an incredible mishpachah! HaMakom Y'nachem Eschem... All my love to you.

Sylvia was a real eshes chail. Just considering her work in palliative care at BaYcrest, and dayeinu, but she did much more mitzvos. May her memory be a blessing to us.

Sylvia was the epitome of a true אשת חיל. The amount of חסד she performed will be her escort into גן עדן. A matriarch to her famy and friends and so devoted to Shaarei Tefillah. A righteous woman worthy of emulation. May the family be comforted knowing so many benefited from her wisdom, sense of humor and righteousness.

Dear Spiegel mishpoche. You are left with a legacy that will continue to influence your daily lives and bring you so much joy as you remember your beloved Mother. My heartfelt condolences to you all. Your Mother will be truly missed here at 2 Neptune, and me particularly as we lived just down the hall from each other, as well discovered we are Lagover/Spiegel mishpoche. I knew Sylvia from her very active participation in the Ilana chapter of Emunah Women (formerly Mizrachi) She was always involved and in later life I encountered her many times, volunteering at Baycrest, and at various shiurim. To the Spiegel family: My sympathy goes out to you at this time of great sorrow and remembrance. When Sylvia taught nursing at Ryerson she offered her ebullient spirit, her knowledge and her expertise to students and colleagues alike. Sylvia was a role model for living a life that embraced her faith, family and friends at the same time as she used her wisdom and abilities in building a better earth.

Many wonderful memories of your beloved mother pass through my mind. Sharrei Tefilllah, Camp Moshava, and the many times at your house on Bannockburn. She was truly a wonderful, caring human being. May you all be comforted and blessed with the knowledge your mother has bestowed on you, and know she was a selfless mother who devoted her life to her loved ones. I understand she was a special nurse and although I met her in her later years, she still had such strength and fortitude. Sylvia always greeted you warmly with a great big smile.
