TAIBA OKUN

November 22, 1922 – January 30, 2021.

Mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, friend, Matriarch.

With great sadness, the family of Taiba Okun announces that she died peacefully in her sleep on January 30th, 2021, at a remarkable 98 years old. The last of her generation, she was a cherished mother of Irene Sagal and Alec and Barbara Okun, proud grandmother of Lana and Stuart, Evelynn and Derek, Lisa and Ilios, and Edward and Kathryn, and super-proud great-grandmother of Zoë, Aidan, Isabella, Aleksandra, Orrin, and Nina.  Her family and friends will always remember her for her kindness and her smile.  There were no bounds to her hospitality or her ability to connect with people.  To have met her is to have loved her.  Her life was an extraordinary journey that began in the old Soviet Union, where she taught children, to Winnipeg, where she worked helping others, to Toronto, where she retired and enjoyed lots of time with friends and family.  Whatever new adventures came to pass, she learned to adapt and to thrive.  Until only a few years ago, she shared this incredible journey with her lifelong companion, Alexander – Nachalnick to those who knew him well.  Together, they had the naches of seeing their children and grandchildren grow up to be menches and know that their great-grandchildren were well on their way.  Taiba and Alexander instilled in their family the virtues of kindness and generosity and taught them resilience and courage.  But most importantly, they taught them to smile.  The sparkle in Taiba’s eyes when she met you, the smile on her face, would make anyone she met her immediate friend for life.

She will be missed by all that had the privilege to know her.  She will forever be in our hearts.
