On December 6th, in her 99 th year, Zelda Ruth Harris (née Slavouski) died the way shelived: engaged, passionate, determined, and considerate of others. Together with her(late) beloved husband of 62 years, Simon, Zelda raised three sons and was proud ofthem and their families: Howard and Bryna, Leonard and Melanie, and Hershel and Mary Anne. She cherished her adult grandchildren and actively maintained closerelationships with Andrea and Bobby, Emily, Jenna and Erin, Brent and Valeriy, Kate, Lauren and Steve, and Evan. Zelda delighted in getting to know her great-grandchildren, Charlie and Jack, and Jonah and Lucas. She deeply valued her friendships with her sister Vivienne and brother-in-law the late Morrie Jacobson, and her late sister-in-law and brother-in-law Rita and Martin Singer, and their families, and maintained a rich correspondence with virtually her whole extended family and numerous life-long friends.

Of her distinguished career as a social worker, Zelda often said “I loved every moment of it.” She worked for years at the Montreal Children’s Hospital, and then taught at the McGiIl School of Social Work. In 1959, Zelda established the Parents of Twins Club, the first of many self-help groups she initiated. She continued to be an energetic promoter of self-help, culminating in her developing the Self-Help Clearinghouse in Montreal and in Toronto.

Zelda was a very early advocate of Dying with Dignity. She has always valued an individual’s right to be in control of their life to the extent that it is possible, and to avoid needless suffering. Zelda continued to be our teacher until her final breath.
